As I’m not a huge *Lord of the Rings* fan, I was a bit sceptical. But I was absolutely delighted with the visit. It’s a beautiful site, designed and maintained with great attention to detail. The guide recounted stories from the filming with great enthusiasm, and we had plenty of time for questions and photos. We highly recommend it! Please keep up the good work!

We had a wonderful guide Natalie who made the whole experience wonderful. She had so much information and knowledge and gave us plenty of time to take photos and explore the village. As someone who has difficulty walking long distances the pace was very comfortable and it did not feel like 2 and a half hours of walking and plenty of stops along the way made it extremely doable. Thanks for a great day out. Five stars

The tour of the film set was fantastic. Everything is really well-maintained and very well organized. We were also incredibly lucky with the weather, and we took some wonderful photos. It's definitely a must-see for fans of "The Lord of the Rings" or "The Hobbit" when visiting New Zealand. The tour was incredible. I was blown away by the beautiful rolling hills and the gorgeous set display. You can tell how much time and energy the grounds keepers put into maintaining the gardens. Our tour guide was also exceptional, big shout out to Cory he made us feel very welcome and cracked some great jokes.

The weather was kind and we thoroughly enjoyed our journey through the Shire. Our tour guide, Ellen, was patient and kind as we all took a gazilion photos. Being able to walk through a hobbit hole was absolutely amazing and was the highlight of our day. It is so worth a visit!

The quaintess of the sets, and the general location, which is stunning. It was an informative guide, helped by the good weather which meant we could linger longer and enjoy the scenery and vista. Oh, and the ginger beer in the Green Dragon was excellent!

Step into the Shire™ on a 2.5-hour guided walking tour of the Hobbiton™ Movie Set, which departs from the Shire’s Rest.

Getting started

Arrive at the Shire’s Rest, where your guide will greet you and check your tickets before the tour begins. After a brief introduction, you’ll set off with your group to explore the 12-acre movie set on foot.

What to expect

This iconic set, built on a 1250-acre working farm near Matamata, is where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies were filmed. Your guide will share behind-the-scenes stories and point out the intricate details that brought Tolkien’s world to life.

Hobbit holes: See the round doors and gardens of the Shire’s famous dwellings.

The Green Dragon™ Inn: Visit the fully reconstructed inn and learn about its role in Hobbiton’s community.

Party Tree and Party Field: Stand beneath the legendary tree and field where Bilbo’s birthday celebration was filmed.

Movie set gardens: Explore lush, seasonal gardens that showcase the horticultural artistry used to create an authentic Hobbit village.

What’s not allowed

Pets are not permitted, except for registered service animals.

Alcohol, drugs, and any form of intoxication are strictly prohibited on the premises.

Large bags, suitcases, and oversized luggage are not allowed on the tour.

Outside food and beverages are not permitted unless specified in your ticket type.

Smoking is not allowed anywhere on the movie set.

The Hobbiton™ Movie Set Tour is not fully wheelchair accessible due to uneven outdoor terrain and gravel paths.

Guests with limited mobility may find some areas difficult to access.
