Luciano, our guide, was an absolute dream! He was enthusiastic, funny, engaging, but above all knowledgeable, ensuring we had a really worthwhile and rewarding tour. Askos were also flexible, which was appreciated. Our tour was booked for 10:30 but our train from Naples broke down. I contacted Askos via WhatsApp and they advised us to contact one of their team when we got there. We eventually managed to get to Herculaneum and spoke to a very helpful Askos staff member. He arranged for us to join a later tour and gave us our entrance tickets beforehand so we could make the most of our time there. Highly recommended.

We got a taxi from the port to Herculaneum (120 euros) for a 2 hr visit. I think this is a little high because it didnt include the entry and its only a 20 min ride allowing the driver to do other jobs before coming back. Anyway the ticket were easily purchased online and emailed to me. Once there Herculaneum didnt disappoint. Lots of archeology well preserved - moasic tiles, fireplaces, columns, buidlings, rooms and so much to walk around and see.

Nos costó más llegar xq en la estación d trenes en Nápoles no nos informaron de un trasbordo para llegar a herculano. Tuvimos q coger un taxi que nos costó 50 euros, precio excesivo ya q estábamos a 10 kms. Pero como teníamos las entradas con vosotros, quisimos llegar con tiempo suficiente. En la entrada d Herculano, la persona q nos atendió fue exquisita. Pasamos un resto de día estupendo

Entry into the site was straightforward there were toilets and storage at the booking office and the site was only a 10min walk from the train station, Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii but better preserved you can see all the important elements of the town in a day and relax in the Garden of idleness for a while, I was definitely worth the visit

The surreal experience of standing in literally another world. The atmosphere was quiet and respectful but what I appreciated the most was one of the quietest politely asked some noisy visitors to member it was a museum and to be quieter. ! Clearly not just a tourist attraction a respected site by all .

Etwas unübersichtlich, auf welcher Plattform man Tickets kauft, original Homepage. Anlage tip top. Plan, guides, Beschreibungen sehr gut. Vielleicht eine "walking Tour mit fortlaufender Nummerierung hilfreich". Zusammen mit Carnuntum (Österreich nähe wien) gibt es sehr gute Einblicke in damalige Zeit.

The Herculanium site is just fantastic, i feel that you cannot visit Pompeii without seeing Herculanium. Herculanium feels less like a ruin. The archaeologist guide Luciano was knowledgeable and passionate bringing it all to life. It makes us want to go again. Best day of our Italian visit.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Herculaneum offers a rare glimpse into daily Roman life, frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. This compact site is renowned for its exceptional preservation, making it a standout among ancient ruins.

What to bring

Carry a valid photo ID or passport for verification at entry.

If you opt for a digital audio guide, bring your own headphones for a better listening experience.

Wear sturdy, comfortable footwear as the ground is uneven in many areas.

Since most of the visit takes place outdoors, pack sunscreen, sunglasses, water, and a hat. The site remains open in all weather conditions, so a light raincoat or umbrella is also useful.

What’s not allowed

Large backpacks, suitcases, and bulky luggage cannot be brought inside or on transfer services.

Food and drinks are not included and may be restricted in certain zones.

Pets are not allowed, except for certified service animals.

Smoking, alcohol, and any prohibited substances are strictly banned on-site.

Flash photography and the use of tripods or professional filming gear may be limited in some areas.

Accessibility

Due to uneven surfaces and steep sections, the site is not fully accessible and may pose challenges for visitors with reduced mobility.

Some ramp access can be arranged at the entrance for those with motor disabilities, though not all parts of the site can be reached.

Accessible restrooms are available.

There is no facility for storing luggage on-site.

Additional information

The guidebook is available only in English and in a digital, downloadable format. No hard copies available.

Children must be accompanied by an adult during the visit.

Certain areas may be closed temporarily due to restoration work or operational needs.

The site is open from 8:30am to 5pm from 15 October to 15 March (last entry 3:30pm), and from 8:30am to 7:30pm between 16 March and 14 October (last entry 6pm).

Free admission is offered on the first Sunday of each month and on select public holidays; reduced fares are available for eligible visitors with valid ID.

If you’re using a digital audio guide app, it’s best to download it before arrival as mobile network coverage on-site may be limited.
