About Karnak Temple

Karnak is not a single monument but a layered temple complex built over about 1,500 years. Within the main Amun-Ra precinct, visitors move from the unfinished First Pylon to the Great Hypostyle Hall, then outward to the Sacred Lake and side temples such as the Temple of Khonsu. That scale and chronology make it different from smaller single-period temple visits.

Did you know?

The First Pylon at Karnak’s main entrance was left unfinished and is partly in ruins, making it a visible example of how some pharaonic building projects stopped before completion.

Why visit Karnak Temple?

About 134 Columns in Great Hypostyle Hall

The Great Hypostyle Hall is Karnak’s most famous space, with about 134 papyrus columns arranged in 16 rows across about 5,000 m². Built mainly under Seti I and Ramesses II, it concentrates reliefs, royal names, and traces of color that are easy to miss without slowing down or using a guide.
