Our English-speaking guide had a real knack for making history come alive – turns out, there's so much more to Edo Castle and the imperial family than I'd imagined! We stopped by a perfectly manicured garden that the emperor himself admires, and saw this fascinating miniature model of the former palace, which helped us picture what once stood there. I loved hearing about the samurai and the shoguns, and the stories of how Tokyo grew out of the old castle grounds. The highlight for me was seeing koi fish gliding under ornate bridges and spotting trees brought from all corners of Japan.
