Getting started

Begin your visit at the Gatehouse on The Terrace, Fremantle. Check in at the Sallyport, where staff will direct you to your tour's departure point. Your guide will introduce the site before leading the group along the route for your selected tour.

What to expect (varies by the tour you select)

Convict Prison Tour

Discover why almost 10,000 men were transported from Great Britain and Ireland to build the Prison, and how they shaped early Western Australia

Your guide walks you through original ground-floor sections and upper levels via a historic staircase (3 floor levels, 17 steps per landing, no elevator)

Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

Tunnels Tour

Descend 20 metres by vertical ladder into a labyrinth of tunnels built by prisoners, in a hardhat, overalls, and safety harness fitted on-site

Trek through dry sections on foot, then board a replica convict punt to explore submerged passageways by boat

Bookings and pre-payment essential; minimum age 12, weight limit 40–140kg, breathalyser test required before starting

Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes

Torchlight Tour

Explore the darker side of the Prison's history after dark, torch in hand, as your guide shares sordid and ghastly stories

Includes entry to the Gallows, a former place of execution

Bookings and pre-payment essential; not recommended for children under 10

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Before and after your tour

The Gatehouse Entry Complex — including the Convict Depot and Visitor Centre display rooms, and the Gift Shop — is open to all visitors free of charge, whether or not you've booked a tour

The Convict Depot includes two tablets where you can search the Convict Database for men transported to the Swan River Colony between 1850 and 1868

Wrapping up

After your tour, you're welcome to spend more time at the Convict Depot and Visitor Centre, or browse the Gift Shop. Meals, transportation, and gratuities are not included.

What to bring

Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes suitable for walking and stairs — several tours involve extensive walking and uneven or narrow historic doorways

Tunnels Tour only: bring or wear socks (boots are provided on-site)

Accessibility

Torchlight Tour: 100% wheelchair accessible

Convict Prison Tour: involves a number of original stairs (up to 3 floor levels, 17 steps per landing) with no elevator — not recommended for those with mobility issues

Tunnels Tour: not wheelchair accessible; requires descending/ascending a 20-metre vertical ladder independently, crouching through low tunnel sections (~1500mm average height), and boarding a boat. Not recommended for anyone with a fear of heights, vertigo, or claustrophobia

What's not allowed

Tunnels Tour: minimum age 12 (ages 12–15 must be accompanied by an adult 18+); strict weight limits of 40–140kg to fit safety equipment; not recommended for pregnant visitors or those with a fungal allergy or severe asthma

Tunnels Tour: participants are breathalysed before starting and must have a blood alcohol level under 0.05

Torchlight Tour: not recommended for children under 10, or anyone with a weak heart or health issues that could be aggravated by jump scares and sudden noises; children must be accompanied by an adult 18+

All three tours carry a content warning covering themes such as incarceration, capital punishment, death, and historical accounts of violence — Torchlight and Tunnels additionally reference entry to the Gallows (a former execution site)

Tunnels Tour: bags, wallets, phones, and cameras (including GoPros) are not permitted on the tour — a complimentary locker is provided

Torchlight and Tunnels Tours: bookings and pre-payment are essential (not just recommended) — Convict Prison Tour bookings are recommended but not required

Tunnels Tour: arrive 15 minutes before departure — latecomers are not admitted
