Hobart Hop-on Hop-off tours: At a glance

A Hop-on Hop-off tour in Hobart is a sightseeing bus loop that links the waterfront, quarters, and gardens so you explore without juggling maps or timetables. It is easier than figuring out commuter buses or parking. Unlimited hops on 24-hour or 48-hour passes cover stops like Salamanca Place, Battery Point, Cascade Brewery, the Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, and the Hobart Convict Penitentiary, with selected tickets adding a kunanyi/Mt Wellington route.

How it works: Choose a 24-hour or 48-hour pass, activate it on first boarding, then hop-on hop-off at any stop.
What's included: Most tours offer open-top and indoor seating, multilingual audio commentary, and a city map.
Flexibility: Use the bus for quick hops between self-paced stops.
Operators: Hop-on Hop-off tours here are run by operator Red Decker.

Who should opt for a Hop-on Hop-off tour in Hobart

Carousel image showing first-time visitors exploring Hobart routes

First-time visitors

Hobart can feel spread out for newcomers, with steep streets between the harbour, heritage quarters, and hillside suburbs. A Hop-on Hop-off pass turns that first day into an overview, using a 90-minute loop and 20 designated stops. Multilingual audio commentary helps you understand areas like Salamanca Place and Constitution Dock as you go.

Carousel image for solo travelers navigating Hobart

Solo travelers

Exploring Hobart alone means juggling commuter bus timetables, hills, and quickly changing weather between sights. Hop-on Hop-off buses simplify that: hourly departures, free Wi‑Fi, and onboard commentary let you move instinctively without over-planning. You can ride between South Hobart Village and the Hobart CBD, staying flexible while still feeling anchored.

Carousel image representing budget travelers in Hobart

Budget travelers

On a tighter budget, the cost of taxis or rideshares from the city centre to outlying hotspots quickly adds up. A Hop-on Hop-off ticket replaces multiple fares with one 24-hour or 48-hour pass, including unlimited hops. You can link places like Wrest Point Casino and Sandy Bay Village without extra transport spend.

Carousel image for art and history enthusiasts in Hobart

Art & history enthusiasts

Hobart’s richest stories in convict and colonial history are scattered across different suburbs and valleys, awkward to combine on foot. Hop-on Hop-off buses join these dots with designated stops and detailed audio commentary. You can trace a full narrative from the Cascades Female Factory to the Hobart Convict Penitentiary and Battery Point.

Carousel image for time-strapped travelers in Hobart

Time-strapped travelers

With only a day in Hobart, fitting both city highlights and the mountain into public transport schedules is challenging, especially without a car. A Hop-on Hop-off pass plus kunanyi/Mt Wellington combo streamlines it: fixed summit departures and city-loop validity. You can pair the pinnacle lookout with time at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.

The ideal Hop-on Hop-off pass duration for your Hobart trip

24-hour pass

Best if you have one full day in Hobart, are in port on a cruise, or just want a solid overview without lingering too long at each stop. You can realistically ride a full 90‑minute loop for orientation, then focus on 3–4 highlights such as Salamanca Place, Battery Point, Cascade Brewery/Female Factory, and the Botanical Gardens. Expect a fairly compact but manageable pace if you start around 9am–10am. The 24-hour City Loop is offered by Red Decker and includes unlimited Hop-on Hop-off travel, multilingual audio commentary, Wi‑Fi, earphones, and a printed guidebook with local discount vouchers.

48-hour pass

Best for a weekend stay, slower pace, or if you like diving deeper into history, museums, and gardens. With 48 hours, you can spread sights across two shorter days: for example, use day one for Salamanca, Battery Point, and the waterfront museums, then day two for the Female Factory, Cascade Brewery, the Convict Penitentiary, and the Botanical Gardens. This pass suits families and relaxed explorers who prefer longer stops and café breaks. Red Decker offers a 48-hour City Loop on its own, and also as the city component of combos that add a kunanyi/Mt Wellington summit tour, a Richmond Village day trip, or both in the Big 3 Combo.

Tips to make the most of your Hop-on Hop-off Hobart tour

  • Do a full loop with a pen in hand : Use your first ride as a full 90-minute loop, staying onboard to note which stops match your interests and how hilly each area looks. Mark favourites on the route map so you can plan later hops around last-bus times.
  • Cluster walkable stops together : Group nearby stops into walking clusters to cut down on waiting. For example, pair Salamanca Place with Battery Point, or Cascade Brewery with the Female Factory, exploring on foot between them and rejoining the bus only when you change area.
  • Stretch a 48-hour pass with combos : If you plan to visit kunanyi/Mt Wellington or Richmond Village, choose a 48-hour pass on selected tours and treat the mountain or village as your main morning activity, using the city loop afterwards for relaxed, shorter sightseeing bursts.
  • Keep the hourly timetable in your pocket : Because buses usually run hourly, check the timetable at your first stop and snap a photo. Aim to leave attractions 10–15 minutes before scheduled departures so you are walking toward the stop, not watching the bus pull away.
  • Build Saturdays around Salamanca : On Saturdays, anchor your day around Salamanca Market by hopping off early, ideally before 11am to beat the heaviest crowds. Afterwards, walk up Kelly's Steps into Battery Point, then rejoin the bus from the quieter residential streets.
  • Dress for four seasons and hilly streets : Hobart’s weather turns quickly, so pack layers and a light rain jacket even in summer, especially if you are pairing the city loop with kunanyi/Mt Wellington. Wear comfortable shoes for Battery Point’s cobbles and South Hobart’s gentle but steady hills.
  • Chase local flavours and Tasmanian souvenirs : Use waterfront stops for Tasmanian seafood at Constitution Dock or casual bites near Brooke Street Pier, then save Salamanca Place and Battery Point for browsing local design, woodwork, and ceramics. If you visit Richmond, allow time for specialty food stores.

Frequently asked questions about Hop-on Hop-off tour Hobart

  • Your Hop-on Hop-off pass activates the moment you first board the bus and your ticket is scanned. It then remains valid for the selected duration, such as 24-hour or 48-hour, counted from that first boarding time, not by calendar day.

  • Child tickets on Hobart's Hop-on Hop-off buses generally apply to children aged 4–16, with reduced fares and family passes available. Policies for infants and very young children can vary, so check your booking confirmation for exact age rules.

  • All modern Hop-on Hop-off buses in Hobart are wheelchair accessible, with ramp access and a dedicated wheelchair bay on the lower deck. Prams and strollers can usually be brought on board, but wheelchair users have priority for accessible spaces.

  • On the Hobart city loop, buses usually run every 60 minutes, completing a full circuit in about 90 minutes. Services typically operate from around 9am–4:30pm in summer and 10am–4:30pm in winter, with extra departures on busy cruise-ship days.

  • Hotel pick-ups are not included with Hobart Hop-on Hop-off tickets; buses operate on fixed city stops only. You will need to make your own way to the nearest stop, often the Tasmanian Travel & Information Centre or Hobart waterfront.

  • If you miss a Hop-on Hop-off departure, simply wait for the next bus on the same route at that stop. In Hobart the usual frequency is every 60 minutes, though exact times can vary slightly with traffic and cruise-ship schedules.

  • The double-decker sightseeing buses in Hobart do not have restrooms on board. Toilets are available at many stops, including Brooke Street Pier, the Tasmanian Travel & Information Centre, major museums, Cascade Brewery, and the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.

  • Food and drink rules are set by the Hobart Hop-on Hop-off operator, but you should expect to keep eating and drinking to a minimum on board. Closed bottles of water are fine, while messy food and alcohol are not allowed.

  • Pets are not permitted on Hobart's Hop-on Hop-off buses, with the exception of registered assistance animals such as guide dogs. If you are traveling with a service animal, you may be asked to show identification or documentation when boarding.

  • Hobart's Hop-on Hop-off buses operate in most weather, with services running year-round except on days like Christmas Day and Good Friday. The open-top deck may be closed in heavy rain or strong winds, so bring layers and waterproofs in case.

Guides on all buses were not only informative but entertaining. The ticketing was confusing if you booked the combo ticket and the help phone number only goes to an inflexible American robot who couldn't answer my question.

An interesting trip but a pity about the weather. Didn't expect sleet in February but the driver did a great job to make up for the lack of view on the mountain.
