Watch Simon McBurney’s enchanting rendition of Mozart’s popular Magic Flute at the West End. Join the classic adventurers Prince Tamino and Papageno on their quest to save Pamina.

Why Watch The Magic Flute

A savoury confluence of spoken dialogues and songs, The Magic Flute is a ‘singspiel’ that has rarely failed to charm audiences since its first premier nearly two and a half centuries ago at the Schikaneder theatre in Vienna. The two-act opera starring Lucy Crowe as Pamina and Rupert Charlesworth as Tamino has been brought to the London Coliseum. The songs will be sung in English with titles projected over the stage. Director Simon McBurney, two-time winner of the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award, returns to the West End after a successful run of his previous show ‘The Encounter’ at the Barbican. The show is sure to be a masterpiece that stays true to the original in spirit while adding a flare that is altogether its own.

The Story

The opera opens with Prince Tamino fleeing a venomous serpent in the woods. He is saved by the ‘Three Ladies’ after he faints, and wakes up to find Papageno the Bird Catcher beside him. The two become friends and go on a quest to save Pamina after they are shown a portrait of the young maiden by the Three Ladies. Prince Tamino is in love with Pamina, but he must brave the trials of fire and water to prove himself a worthy match for Pamina. They confront Pamina’s evil mother, the Queen of the Night, with the high priest Sarastro’s help, and banish her into eternal darkness. The classic tale has survived the test of time, and the genius of mozart shines through every elegant measure of the score.
