The plot centres around Laurey Williams, a farm girl, and her courtship by two competitive suitors, cowboy Curly McLain and the fearsome farmhand Jud Fry, as they navigate the ups and downs of young love. Along the way, they must deal with the community's brutality, which threatens to destroy their ideal way of life.
