Wonderful experience that opened my eyes to the amazing work underway on Antarctica by thousands of brave, resilient scientific teams. Incredibly well done immersive experience. Loved every minute! Great for adults and families. Can easily spend 2-4 hours taking it all in.

The whole experience. 3D show, the drive in the ice trackor was really good. Information in the theatre. Information on the walls as you go around. Staff very pleasant, informative and helpful.

Arrive at the International Antarctic Center, located next to Christchurch International Airport. Present your ticket at the main entrance, where staff will guide you through initial access and direct you to the core exhibits.

What to expect

This famous center brings the wonders of Antarctica to Christchurch, with immersive exhibits and interactive encounters that highlight the continent’s unique environment and the spirit of polar exploration.

Features

Antarctic storm room: Step into a specially designed chamber and safely experience the chill of a simulated Antarctic blizzard.

Hägglund vehicle ride: Climb aboard a genuine all-terrain Hägglund for a bumpy, off-road adventure that demonstrates how scientists travel across Antarctic ice.

Little Blue Penguins: Meet rescued Kororā, the world’s smallest penguin species, and learn about their conservation.

4D Antarctic experience show: Enjoy a multi-sensory film that combines visual effects, motion, and environmental cues to transport you to the heart of Antarctica.

Husky encounters: Visit the “cuddle zone” to meet friendly huskies, the historic sled dogs of Antarctic expeditions.

This experience is wheelchair and stroller accessible, and most travelers can participate. Children must be over 1.2 meters tall to join the Hägglund ride.

What to bring

Bring a valid photo ID to match the name on your booking if requested at the entrance.

Dress in comfortable clothing and bring a warm layer, as some exhibits simulate cold Antarctic conditions.

Ensure you have your own transportation to the venue, as transfers are not included.

What’s not allowed

Excess luggage and large bags may incur additional charges or may not be permitted inside.

Pets are not allowed, except for registered service animals.

Hägglund rides are not recommended for visitors with heart conditions, back or neck pain, or if pregnant.

Children under 1.2 meters in height are not permitted on the Hägglund ride. All children must be accompanied by an adult for this activity.

Accessible restrooms are available on site.

The experience is near public transportation.

The International Antarctic Center is open every day except Christmas Day, from 9am to 4:30pm.

You can stay inside the center as long as you like during operating hours.

Children must be over 1.2 meters tall and accompanied by an adult to participate in the Hägglund ride.

Please allow 1 to 5 hours for your visit to fully enjoy all exhibits and activities.
