Penang’s countryside town of Balik Pulau is a haven for nature lovers and thus, is a popular tourist attraction. Situated in the southwestern part of Penang, Balik Pulau literally translates to ‘back of the island’. Hop on a cycle and enjoy the early morning breeze as you weave through a labyrinth of roads with a professional guide. On the way, you will come across serene paddy fields stretching for miles on both sides.
You will then arrive at the fishing village and watch as fishermen line the riverbanks with their fishing gear and display their hard-earned catch. Next, have a friendly chat with the local villagers of Kampung Terang and see their daily routines up close. As you pedal through its winding roads, you will find many stilt houses occupying this hillside region. The village is also home to one of the gigantic container arts that Penang is famous for. The Joy of Harvest is painted over three vertical shipping containers and rises 12 meters (or 40 feet) in the air like a monolith.
