This is an ESSENTIAL trip for anyone visiting Switzerland. 'Stunning' doesn't do justice to the views you get, and it is surprising how quickly you climb out from Zermatt to see views to die for. Don't be put off if it's cloudy in the town, likelihood is the clouds will only be in the valley, and up above will be warm and sunny (as it was for us last week). I took the opportunity to hike down between two fo the train stations when we came down - probably the most beautiful walk I've ever done. 100% a 'must do'......

We left Zermatt in heavy fog, hoping we would break through to sunshine as we rose higher. The air was thick and it felt a little creepy that we could not see anything until we were upon it. The fog dissipated some by the time we reached the first station. We moved into the giant gondola that would take us to the top. The coach was fairly full of hopeful riders. As we neared the top we broke through the fog to see the Matterhorn shining through the mist. The whole coach cheered!

The gondola ride, stunning views, amenities, and experiences at the different stops were definitely worth the price of the ticket! One recommendation: clearer signage. We asked 4 different town employees if we were on the right road and each gave us different instructions or did not know the answer. One person told us that it was a one minute walk from the train/shuttle station to the gondola.

Was unsure what to expect but our journey to the "top" was a highlight of our time and made for the perfect day trip. We rode all the way up and the hiked down to a great lunch spot! The views were beyond what we expected. Would 10/10 recommend.

We explored the Matterhorn with the Gornergrat railway. Everything worked out well with the tickets so far, with one criticism: we lined up with the CR code tickets we were sent, but we discovered that you have to redeem the CR code ticket for the actual entry ticket at the ticket counter beforehand. So, after a long wait in line, we had to go back to the ticket counter. Suggested solution: maybe a note during ticket purchase that you first have to get a real ticket, or did I miss that?
