On this day tour, you will discover Sicilian highlights along with its active volcano, Mount Etna, what ancient Greeks believed was the home of fire-god Vulcan. Take a jeep ride through Etna craters, lava fields, and nature scapes, away from all the tourists, and admire the wild and natural beauty of your surrounding environment. Learn about the biology, geology, and volcanology of Etna as you journey through its evocative landscapes. After your Etna tour, you will have the opportunity to taste local wines, liqueurs, honey, and other Sicilian products. On the half-day tour, you get to choose between a morning or evening timing.
To make the best of your experience after Etna, choose carefully between the following three options for the full-day tour!
Aci Castello
Accompanied by a marine biologist and an underwater environmental guide, you will head to explore the enchanting lava sea beds of Aci Castello, also known as the “Island of the Cyclops.” Here, you will snorkel in a protected marine area. Dive beneath the surface and discover underwater columnar basalt, lava ropes, lava cushions, marine life, and colorful plants. At the end of this truly magical experience, you will be dropped back to where the journey began, in Catania.
Gole dell’ Alcantara
Leave Etna behind as you head to the gorges of Alcantara, which were formed by black lava walls molded in the prismatic shape that is typical of rocks during the cooling process. Admire the columnar basalts, the lava formations, and extraordinary shapes of varying thickness and orientation. Tour the nature reserve before heading back to where you started.
Acireale & Acitrezza
Head to the ancient town of Acireale, which is located on a lava-stone plateau overlooking the sea. Visit a pastry shop and sample typical products like Sicilian granita, arancini, and cannoli. The next part of the journey will see you in the seaside village of Acitrezza. Off its coast lie, three tall, prominent sea stacks (Island of the Cyclops) which great legends claim were the great stones thrown at Odysseus in the epic poem The Odyssey. After a short tour around the place and the surrounding beach, you will return to Catania with tonnes of memories to last you a lifetime.
