  • Alexandria in a day: ancient ruins, a legendary library, and a seafood lunch on Egypt's Mediterranean coast, with an Egyptologist making sense of all of it.

    Getting started

Your guide meets you at your Cairo or Giza hotel in the morning for the roughly 2.5-hour drive northwest along the desert highway. The landscape shifts as you near the coast — dust gives way to sea air and the pale shimmer of the Mediterranean. By the time you reach Alexandria, you're already oriented: your guide uses the drive to set the historical stage, so you arrive ready to explore, not still catching up.

    What to expect

Your Egyptologist leads you through a city that layers 2,300 years of history without much signposting — which is exactly why the guide matters. At Pompey's Pillar, you're looking at a 25-meter red granite column that has stood since 297 AD; your guide explains who actually built it (not Pompey) and why. The Roman Theater at Kom El-Deka is one of the only intact Roman performance venues in Egypt, with marble seating still arranged in its original semicircle. At the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, you see the modern successor to one of the ancient world's great centers of knowledge — the exterior alone, a tilted disc etched with 120 scripts, is worth the stop.

Lunch (if selected) is a sit-down seafood meal at a local restaurant — grilled fish, calamari, and mezze typical of the Alexandrian coast. It's included in your day and gives you a natural mid-tour break.

Shared tours run on a set itinerary with a small group. Private tours move at your pace, with more time where you want it and flexibility to ask questions without an audience.

    Features

    • Egyptologist-led: Your guide specializes in Egyptian history — not just a driver with a script, but someone who can answer the questions the plaques don't address.

    • Door-to-door transfers: Air-conditioned pickup from your Cairo or Giza hotel removes the logistics of getting to and from Alexandria on your own (roughly 220km each way).

    • Four distinct sites: Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Pompey's Pillar, Kom El-Deka Roman Theater, and additional photo stops cover Alexandria's Greco-Roman and modern layers in one day.

    • Seafood lunch option: A sit-down Mediterranean meal at a local restaurant — Alexandrian coast cooking, not a tourist buffet.

    • Private upgrade available: More flexibility, personal pace, and one-on-one time with your guide for the same itinerary.

    • Entry tickets add-on: Standard tour includes exterior visits; add entry tickets to go inside the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Roman Theater.

  • Accessibility

    • Wheelchair access: This tour is not wheelchair accessible.

    What’s not allowed

    • Drinks inclusion: Drinks are not included with your lunchtime meal.
