A great trip, definitely worth recommending! I loved the views of the Blue Lagoon and Crystal Lagoon the most—the water there is an incredible color. The organization was excellent; everything ran smoothly and stress-free. The crew was helpful and friendly, and the free time on Gozo was perfectly planned. The whole trip is a great mix of sightseeing, relaxation, and beautiful scenery. If anyone is on the fence—go for it without hesitation!

What happens on a Blue Lagoon Malta boat trip

Card 1 — Board in Sliema or Bugibba and sail out

Check in at the harbor, then board a modern, air‑conditioned catamaran. After a short safety briefing, you cruise 60–90 minutes past Malta’s coastline, sea cliffs, and small caves in generally calm, open water.

Card 2 — Cruise past Comino’s cliffs and grottos

Glide along Comino’s rugged shoreline for about 20–30 minutes. You motor close to sea caves and rock arches, taking photos from the open deck while feeling strong sun and occasional sea spray in breezy conditions.

Card 3 — Arrive at Blue Lagoon and disembark

The catamaran moors or docks near the small Comino jetty. You step onto concrete then uneven rocky ground, navigating busy walkways and steps. Allow 15–20 minutes to get oriented and find a base spot.

Card 4 — Swim and snorkel in Blue Lagoon

Spend roughly 1.5–3 hours swimming in clear, slightly salty turquoise water that’s shallow near shore and quickly deepens. Expect warm temperatures in summer, boat traffic outside roped zones, and crowded rocky entry points at midday.

Card 5 — Sunbathe, snack, or explore on foot

Between swims, relax 1–2 hours on hot limestone ledges or rented sunbeds, or walk uphill to basic food trucks. Terrain is dusty and exposed, with strong UV and limited shade, so hats, water, and sturdy sandals help.

Card 6 — Optional short walk to viewpoints

If time allows, follow rough trails 20–40 minutes round-trip to viewpoints above the lagoon. Paths are rocky and unshaded, with loose stones underfoot, but reward you with quieter spots and elevated views before returning to the jetty.

Card 7 — Reboard and cruise back to Malta

You rejoin the catamaran at the agreed time, often amid moderate crowds on the jetty. The 60–90 minute return cruise offers tired swimmers shade, air conditioning, onboard WiFi, and late-afternoon views before docking back in Sliema or Bugibba.

How physically demanding is a Blue Lagoon Malta boat trip

Swimming in the Blue Lagoon — Main activity once you arrive

Swimming is optional, but it’s the core reason most people come. The water is shallow near parts of the shore, then gets deeper within a few meters. Expect rocky entry points, ladders from boats, and heavy boat traffic nearby. It suits confident swimmers and supervised older kids; non-swimmers should stay near ladders or remain onboard.

Getting on and off the boat — Short but awkward movement

Boarding is mandatory. On ferries and smaller boats, expect stepping across gaps, balancing on moving surfaces, and using short stairways or ladders. At Comino jetty, surfaces are uneven and crowded. It suits most adults and older children; travelers with limited mobility, poor balance, or wheelchair users should think twice or choose to stay on a larger boat.

Walking on Comino — Optional shore exploration

Walking is optional unless your tour requires disembarkation. The ground is rocky, uneven, and exposed, with little shade. Even short distances feel harder in midday heat. Reaching quieter spots like Santa Marija Bay means roughly 15–25 minutes each way. It suits fit adults and teens; travelers with bad knees, balance issues, or heat sensitivity may prefer staying near the jetty or onboard.

Climbing boat ladders and rock access — Most limiting movement for some travelers

Re-entering the boat after a swim is optional only if you do not swim; otherwise it’s unavoidable. Boat ladders are steep, wet, and narrow, and rock areas can be slippery. This is manageable for most active travelers, but older visitors, anyone with knee or hip issues, and very young children may need crew help or should skip the swim entirely.

Food and drink on board

Most Blue Lagoon boat trips are focused on transport and swimming rather than meals, so plan to bring your own food and water. The standard Comino Blue Lagoon catamaran described here does not include any meals or drinks; you’ll find only basic snacks and kiosks once you land on Comino, often with queues and higher prices at midday. Think of onboard refreshments as a top‑up, not a main meal. Eat a normal breakfast or early lunch before departure, then pack extra water, light snacks, and anything needed for children or specific diets. Vegetarian, vegan, and allergy-friendly options on Comino are limited and inconsistent, so self-catering is the most reliable choice.

Plan your boat trip to the Blue Lagoon in Malta

Timings

  • Standard full-day catamaran cruises: usually depart 9:00–10:00, return 17:00–18:00, around 7–8 hours door-to-door
  • Half-day / express boats: common slots 9:00–13:00 or 14:00–18:00, about 4 hours total including sailing
  • Service is most frequent May–October, very limited November–March and weather-dependent in winter
  • Best comfort and water temperatures for long swims are typically late May–June and September–October, when seas are warm but crowds slightly lower than July–August

Frequently asked questions about boat trips to Blue Lagoon (Comino), Malta

  • Most travelers with average mobility manage fine. You should be comfortable walking up and down boat steps and over uneven, sometimes slippery rocks. If climbing ashore looks difficult, you can usually stay on the boat and swim via ladders.

  • Yes, with precautions. The lagoon is shallow near shore and boats have ladders, but there are no consistently staffed lifeguards. Non-swimmers and young children should use flotation, stay close to adults, and avoid swimming across the channel.

  • Shore access is challenging: there are steps, gaps between boat and jetty, and uneven rocks. Large catamarans are usually easiest, as you can stay onboard and use ladders with assistance. Speedboats and long walks on Comino are not recommended.

  • Your ticket covers the return boat trip and time at Blue Lagoon; some boats add Wi‑Fi, slides, or basic commentary. Expect to pay extra for food, drinks, shore sunbeds, lockers, and any optional upgrades or water activities.

  • Bring swimwear, a towel, strong sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, plenty of water, snacks, and sturdy sandals or water shoes. A light cover‑up and dry clothes help for the return journey. If you snorkel, bringing your own mask is useful.

  • In July–August, 10:30–14:00 is extremely crowded on shore. For a calmer experience, visit in May–June or September and aim to arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00. Evening or early‑morning trips feel far less hectic.

  • Operators may reroute, shorten, or cancel trips in strong winds or rough seas. If a departure is cancelled, you’re usually offered a new date or a refund according to the operator’s policy, but same‑day changes are limited in peak season.

  • Many Blue Lagoon cruises allow free changes or cancellations up to a set cutoff, often 24–48 hours before departure, but this varies. Closer to the date, changes are harder and late cancellations may incur full charges.

  • There are basic kiosks on Comino selling fast food and drinks, often with queues and higher prices. Some boats sell snacks or simple meals onboard. To avoid delays and cost, many visitors bring snacks and eat a main meal back on Malta or Gozo.

  • It’s possible if you lose track of time or queue for the wrong company. Always confirm your exact return time and departure jetty when boarding, and arrive early for the return. Missing the last scheduled sailing can mean stressful delays.
