I enjoyed the tour and the explanations offered by Hal, our guide. They were very informative and made the entire experience worth the time and money. I appreciate the guide for making the tour more interesting by sharing real life experiences from the life of the sultans, the harem and how all the Topkapi palace life contributed to lifting the ottoman elite. This kind of things you can't find in books. We visited as a family, with our daughters 9 and 6 years old, and although we had to translate for them, they were captivated and stayed interested the entire time we had Hal guiding us. This was a very good experience and I recommend to anyone interested to get real insights while visiting the Topkapi palace.

Il percorso di visita fatto in maniera diversa da quello standard del Palazzo Topkapi partendo dalla visita della chiesa di Sant'Elena, poi l'Harem con la guida ed infine la visita del palazzo in maniera autonoma ,con i propri tempi è una bella idea . Facendo così hai più tempo per fermarti per le cose che piacciono di più. Anche l'audioguida creata appositamente è fantastica. Complimenti. Un saluto da Istanbul, Alberto

Despite the fact that the Dsign cafe now has a new name we found our guide. He was very knowledgeable and entry to all parts of palace was smoothly done. We loved the palace and enjoyed all the historical information. Thank you and well done.

De gids was niet onvriendelijk maar werkte wel op automatische piloot. Ik heb hem op de toer geen enkele keer weten lachen. We hadden beter zelf gewone, goedkope tickets gekocht en zelf individueel Topkapie bezocht. Er waren nergens wachtrijen.

Getting started

Meet the staff at Chimney Bistro, located close to Topkapi Palace, where your skip-the-line entry will be arranged. After ticket validation, enter the palace complex and begin exploring independently with an expert guide, who helps you navigate the courtyards, buildings, and highlights at your own pace.

Inside the seat of the Ottoman Empire

Once home to Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years, the Topkapi Palace is a vast complex of courtyards, pavilions, and gardens overlooking the Bosphorus. As you walk through the ceremonial gates and open courtyards, you’ll learn how the empire was governed, how court life functioned, and how power was displayed through architecture, ritual, and access. Highlights include imperial halls, treasury displays, and viewpoints offering sweeping views across Istanbul’s waterways.

The Harem & life behind Palace walls

Your ticket includes access to the Harem, one of the most intriguing parts of the palace. Far from being simply a private residence, the Harem functioned as a highly structured living and administrative space where the sultan’s family, concubines, and officials lived under strict rules. With the local guide, you’ll gain insight into daily routines, education, hierarchy, and the political influence that often emerged from within these walls.

Discovering Hagia Irene

After completing your visit to Topkapi Palace, continue on foot to Hagia Irene, one of Istanbul’s oldest surviving churches and a rare example that was never converted into a mosque.

A window into Byzantine Constantinople

As you explore the spacious interior, notice the original Byzantine architectural features, including the basilica-style layout, high vaulted ceilings, and the simple apse marked by a large cross rather than figurative mosaics. The guide explains how Hagia Irene served multiple roles over the centuries, from an early place of worship to an armory and later a museum, and highlights its exceptional acoustics, which continue to make it a venue for concerts today.

What to bring

Wear respectful attire when visiting Hagia Sophia. Women are advised to avoid knee-length shorts, skirts, or attire revealing shoulders or chests, and are encouraged to partially cover their hair with a scarf. Men should avoid knee-length shorts or attire exposing their shoulders.

Carry a valid photo ID that matches the name on your booking, as it may be requested at the entrance.

What’s not allowed

Re-entry is not allowed after you leave the venue.

Large bags, suitcases, and oversized luggage are not allowed inside the venues.

Alcohol and drugs are strictly prohibited on the premises.

Pets are not allowed, except for registered service animals.

Accessibility

This experience is not suitable for wheelchair users.

Additional information

There is a mandatory security check at all venues, which cannot be skipped. During peak times, especially between June and August, security queues may take up to an hour.

Your ticket includes priority access to the Topkapi Palace but does not allow you to skip security lines.

Please meet your host at the designated meeting point (Chimney Bistro) for entry to Topkapi Palace.

This ticket grants access to the visiting area and Upper Gallery of Hagia Sophia, not the prayer area downstairs.

Please note that the Topkapi Palace is closed on Tuesdays.

Clothing and scarves can be purchased at the entrance to Hagia Sophia if needed.
