Escape Marrakesh for a full day at Ouzoud Falls, North Africa's tallest waterfall at 110 meters. Hike through olive groves, spot wild Barbary macaques, ride a boat to the cascades' base, and explore Berber villages along the way.
Getting started
Your driver picks you up from your hotel or riad in Marrakesh at 8:00am in an air-conditioned vehicle. The 3-hour drive northeast passes through small Berber towns, olive groves, and argan tree cooperatives. Pickup details will be sent via email or WhatsApp the day before your tour by 6pm. For last-minute bookings, you'll be contacted shortly after booking. Have your booking confirmation ready.
What to expect
A full day exploring Morocco's most impressive natural wonder. You'll spend about 4 hours at Ouzoud Gorge, including a 1.5-hour guided hike along trails with multiple viewpoints of the cascading water. The hike descends from the top of the falls to the base, where you'll ride a boat close to the main cascade. Barbary macaques are commonly spotted along the trails and in the olive groves—your guide points out safe viewing spots.
Features
-
Scenic drive through Atlas foothills: Leave Marrakesh and travel 150km northeast through traditional Berber villages with distinctive red clay architecture. Pass olive groves that give the falls their name (Ouzoud means "olive" in Berber) and argan tree cooperatives where local women produce Moroccan argan oil. The journey takes 3 hours each way with scheduled breaks.
-
Tamellalt village stop: Pause in Tamellalt around 10:00am for a 30-minute break. Grab tea, coffee, or a light Moroccan breakfast (at own cost) at a roadside café before continuing to the falls. Restrooms available.
-
Arrive at Ouzoud Falls: Reach the village of Ouzoud near Tanaghmeilt at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains. The falls cascade 110 meters through three tiers—the upper cascade alone drops 75 meters. Water flow is strongest in spring from snowmelt, creating a thundering wall of water and rainbow-filled mist.
-
Guided 1.5-hour hike: Your local guide leads the hike from the top of the falls down to the base along well-maintained trails with sturdy railings. Multiple spur trails offer closer viewpoints of the cascades. Some visitors shelter in travertine alcoves behind the main drop. The trail passes through olive groves where traditional water mills once operated.
-
Barbary macaque viewing: Spot Barbary macaques (Barbary apes) in their natural habitat along the trails and in the olive trees. These playful, social primates are native to the Atlas Mountains and gather in groups. Your guide points out the best viewing spots and explains their behavior. Keep your distance—they're wild animals.
-
Boat ride to the base: Board a small, colorful boat at the first pool below the falls. The boatman navigates close to the main 75-meter cascade, where cool mist sprays over you. The 10-15 minute ride offers a unique perspective looking up at the towering falls. Bring a rain jacket or waterproof camera cover—you will get wet.
-
Riverside cafés and viewpoints: Climb back up via a series of steps alongside the falls' multi-tiered drop. Cliffsside cafés overlook the cascades, offering traditional Moroccan fare like tagine, couscous, and freshly brewed mint tea (at own cost unless lunch upgrade selected). The final viewpoint at the top provides a broad contextual view of the entire gorge.
-
Return journey: Depart Ouzoud around 4:00-5:00pm for the 3-hour drive back to Marrakesh. Arrive between 7:00-7:30pm depending on traffic and weather. Drop-off at your hotel/riad or a different location in Marrakesh upon request.
You'll return to Marrakesh in the evening with drop-off at your hotel or a different location in the city if requested. Actual return time may vary due to traffic or weather conditions.
