La Quinta da Regaleira té racons realment fascinants, com el famós pou iniciàtic i el seu entramat de túnels, però l'experiència global queda molt deslluïda per la massificació turística. És gairebé impossible gaudir del misticisme o de la pau dels seus jardins quan has de fer cues monumentals només per fer una foto o per caminar pels senders. A més, la manca de control en l'aforament fa que un lloc que hauria de ser màgic es converteixi en un espai estressant i incòmode de visitar.

O Palácio Nacional de Sintra é um monumento belíssimo e muito bem preservado. A visita é imperdível. A Quinta da Regaleira é uma experiência inesquecível. A arquitetura do local é muito impressionante.

Getting started

Start at either attraction and present your valid ticket at the entrance. At the National Palace of Sintra, head inside for a self-guided visit at your own pace. At Monserrate Palace & Park, use your fast-track entry to bypass the regular ticket queue, then access your audio guide in Portuguese, English, Spanish, or French before exploring the palace and gardens.

What to expect

National Palace of Sintra

Right in Sintra's historic centre, this palace was shaped and expanded by Portuguese monarchs over centuries. Its rooms tell the story through painted ceilings, royal symbols, decorative tiles, and grand spaces once used for banquets, receptions, and court life. Look out for the palace's famous twin chimneys before heading inside to explore.

Features:

Look up in the Swan Room: Enter the palace's largest room and look up at its famous ceiling, decorated with white swans. This was once the setting for royal banquets, receptions, concerts, and other major court occasions.

Count the Magpies: Head into the Magpie Room and spot the 136 birds painted across the ceiling. Once used for royal audiences, the room later became a space for banquets.

Find Portugal's noble families: Don't miss the Room of the Coats of Arms, where the royal family's symbols sit alongside the coats of arms of 72 leading noble households.

Monserrate Palace & Park

Monserrate feels like stepping into a completely different version of Sintra. Shaped into its present form in the 19th century by Francis Cook and architect James Knowles Jr., the estate combines Romantic architecture with gardens filled with plant species from around the world. The result? An exotic palace surrounded by an equally interesting park.

Features:

Explore the palace interiors: Walk through spaces including the Atrium, Central Gallery, Dining Room, Library, Music Room, Kitchen, and Bedroom Gallery, each adding another layer to the palace experience.

Don't miss the Music Room: Step into the palace's main social hall, designed with excellent acoustics and once used by the Cook family and their guests for musical entertainment.

Wander through gardens: Follow winding paths through the Fern Valley, Japanese Garden, Rose Garden, and other themed spaces, stopping at sights like Beckford's Waterfall and the Indian Arch.

Skip the queue & listen as you go: Use your fast-track entry to get past the regular ticket queue, then explore with the included audio guide available in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French.

What to bring

National Palace of Sintra

Stay comfortable in the sun: Carry plenty of water, a hat, and sunglasses, especially if you're visiting during the warmer summer months.

Capture your visit: Bring a camera to take photos of the palace's interiors and gardens.

Monserrate Palace

Dress for exploring the park: Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing, so allow yourself enough time to walk around comfortably. A hat and water can also come in handy on warmer days.

Audio guide: Download the audio app before reaching the meeting point to dodge any network glitches at the location.

What's not allowed

National Palace of Sintra

Items you’ll need to leave behind: Large backpacks, suitcases, drones, and selfie sticks are not permitted inside the palace.

Visiting with animals: Pets are not allowed at the palace, with the exception of guide dogs.

Monserrate Palace

Bringing your dog to restricted areas: Dogs are welcome in the Park of Monserrate, but they must stay on designated paths and out of areas marked as off-limits. Dogs must not disturb other visitors or animals.

Rules: Only one dog is allowed per visitor and must be kept on a non-extendable leash. Potentially dangerous breeds must be accompanied by someone over 16 and wear a muzzle and a leash no longer than one metre.

Accessibility

Getting around the palace: The palace is wheelchair accessible, although some areas may be difficult to reach.

Monserrate Palace

Parking: Two parking spaces are reserved for visitors with mobility restrictions.

Access inside the palace: The Palace entrance and ground floor can be accessed via a ramp. However, the second floor and kitchen are not accessible to visitors with mobility restrictions.

Areas: Accessible toilets, as well as an accessible cafeteria and shop, are available.

Moving through the park: A recommended accessible route leads from the entrance towards the Palace, although some sections are steep and are best attempted with an assistant.

Reserve mobility equipment in advance: Manual folding wheelchairs and traction equipment are also available with advance reservation, subject to availability.

Guide dogs: Properly identified assistance dogs are allowed on site, and drinking bowls are available for them.

Plan your arrival: The last entry is at 5:30pm, and tickets will not be issued after this time.

Monserrate Palace

Location: The Park and Palace of Monserrate is in Sintra, about 30 kilometers from Lisbon.

How to get there: You can reach Sintra easily by taking the train from Lisbon.

Opening hours: Please check the opening hours and last admission time before your visit.

Transport note: Transportation to the palace is not included in your ticket.

A place to stop for a bite: Located in the former stables in the heart of the park, Monserrate's Tea House offers cafeteria service, light meals, and refreshments during your visit.
