Both sites are stunning in their own way. Villa Adriana exceeded our expectations - the features can only be fully appreciated in person. The fountains at Villa d'Este unfortunately started their closure on the day we arrived, which we knew in advance. The villa interiors are beautiful and the detail of the fountains was still spectacular. We will plan to visit the gardens when the water is operating.

It was an incredible experience on every level, and much less crowded than any other place in Rome. It's great to be able to visit a place like this without being caught in a flood of visitors. Big downside... transportation to get there is not easy, and shuttle bus directions are completely lacking. There's an urgent need for action here.

We took a taxi to and from Villa D'Este. Convenience won. The gardens and fountains are what we came to see and they did not disappoint. They are lovely and unique and completely worth the trip. Lots of shade on a hot day. Wonderful to be able to just stop for a drink of icy cold water at the fountains. A spectacular sight.

I visited on a rainy day, which meant all the fountains were turned off and the on‑site ticket price was reduced. Because of these tickets, I couldn’t benefit from that discount and ended up paying more than necessary. The digital audio guide covered only a few locations and offered limited detail, so it didn’t add much to the experience. The staff at both Villa d’Este and Villa Adriana, however, were exceptionally helpful and accommodating, which made the visit itself enjoyable despite the weather. Buying tickets directly at the venue also gives you the freedom to adjust your plans if the weather changes. The pre‑booked skip‑the‑line ticket locks you into a specific day and time, which isn’t ideal when conditions can affect the experience so much. Overall, purchasing tickets on‑site is better value, more flexible, and you won’t miss anything by skipping this particular ticket option.

It was a spectacular visit. The only problem is that the audio guide fails inside villa d'Este.
