Both sites are stunning in their own way. Villa Adriana exceeded our expectations - the features can only be fully appreciated in person. The fountains at Villa d'Este unfortunately started their closure on the day we arrived, which we knew in advance. The villa interiors are beautiful and the detail of the fountains was still spectacular. We will plan to visit the gardens when the water is operating.

It was an incredible experience on every level, and much less crowded than any other place in Rome. It's great to be able to visit a place like this without being caught in a flood of visitors. Big downside... transportation to get there is not easy, and shuttle bus directions are completely lacking. There's an urgent need for action here.

We took a taxi to and from Villa D'Este. Convenience won. The gardens and fountains are what we came to see and they did not disappoint. They are lovely and unique and completely worth the trip. Lots of shade on a hot day. Wonderful to be able to just stop for a drink of icy cold water at the fountains. A spectacular sight.

The gardens at Villa d'Este are stunning...even in November, and Hadrian's Villa an interesting afternoon and a good walk.

I really can't review this because we wound up not taking the tour, but we should have. Instead we took the train from Roma Tiburtina to Tivoli. I had expected that we would be able to take taxis in Tivoli--after all, it's a major tourist attraction--but that turns out to be impossible to do. We wound up visiting the Villa d'Este, a long walk from the train station, and we enjoyed our visit. We never got to the Villa Adriana (although there is a city bus that goes there,we didn't take it). So, as I wrote, it would have been much better to have taken this tour. We reserved several days in advance, and, as opposed to some other tours we had booked, this one was non-cancellable, so we were simply out the money we had paid for it (and it was not cheap).

Everything worked well. The audio guide is not very convenient because the numbers do not match. This means a lot of searching and not everything is described as shown on the panels on site for the audio guide on site
