My wife and I made the climb to the top of the Duomo(which is even more work than we expected) but as others have said, it was really worth it. The views were so wonderful that we stayed up there far longer then I ever expected. I took picture after picture and now that I have all of them on my computer at home I wonder why I didn't take even more. I don't know when that has happened before. The day was bright and sunny but the sky was also full of puffy, litttle, white clouds being blown about. A sea of red, tile roof tops went out in all directions below us and it looked like we could see for many miles.
"We went into the cathedral first which was free and had amazing art in it . The queue looked long but it only took about 10 minutes. After the cathedral we decided to go up the dome. The queue was about 30 minutes and it was about €6 each (apart from children who were free). There are 463 spiral steps to the top, it is very tight and to top it off there is only one way up and one way down. By the time you reach the top you are almost on your knees getting onto the roof. I would definitely not advise anyone afraid of tight spaces or height to go up this dome, although the views from the top were magnificent!"
the duomo is amazing. be ready to hike though. the climb up to the top is long and steep, but totally worth it once you get on top of the dome. the only problem is the amount of people going up and down can cause a claustrophobic feeling between the walls. but it is the best view of the city if you want to see it all.
Yes, it is a steep climb-but more than worth the effort. Try to climb the bell tower, too. Breathtaking views! And the frescoes are also worth looking at. Loved Florence-and all of Italy!
"The Duomo of Florence is huge, and magnificent. Perhaps the outside is the most amazing part, covered with elaborate sculptures in white, pink and green marble. Inside is nice, but there are no benches to sit upon, so not really a mediative place. I didn't have any lines to get into the Cathedral itself even during the peak of tourist season midday. However, there were long lines to pay to climb the tower, and I didn't have the energy to do that!"
The striking white, green and pink marble exterior facade is actually a 19th century add on. You can get a better feel for the age of the Duomo once inside. After exploring this impressive monument, owned by the city of Florence, be sure to go downstairs and look at the layers of ancient history uncovered under the Duomo. In some ways it is more interesting than the Duomo itself. I recommend reading up about the features of the Duomo, such as the doors and the history of construction ahead of time. Fascinating!
The Duomo is under reparation then was impossible to rich the top level of the roof. Also started the rain
We enjoyed our tour.
Wonderful views. Very short queue. But... there are a few ancient staircases to climb, more if you want to go to the real top. Visitors should be forwarned.
Was perfect, everything!! Beautiful views. Great experience Thanks!!
Everything was great and Duomo is very beautiful!
We absolutely loved the Duomo! It was so much more than we expected. All the statuses were so intriguing, and The architectures was brilliant.
Your guide Beatrice was absolutely delightful very welcoming to us and the group very knowledgeable and rightly so enthusiastic about the cathederal and Milan. She engaged totally with you individually often making eye to eye contact and therefore feeling she is talking to us personally. By far the most engaging guide we have experienced and so glad it was here in Milan. Thank you. We will certainly be recommending and using you again when we have the chance
Was in Florence June 21-24, 2005. Arrived at the Duomo early because the lines get long. Waited 45 mins for it to open. Once inside we were disappointed that no one was allowed under the dome to view it. It was roped off so you can't even take pictures of the dome either. The cathedral is beautiful though and you are allowed to take pictures and video, they just won't be of the dome.
It’s definitely worth it.
The ticket service is definitely worth it. Did not have to wait. Fantastic!
