Highly recommend. They did a great job w make up and costume. The kimono are prettier and fancier than what you see walking around. The photographer is talented. They give you a photo book with four retouched photos and charge 1000 yen for each additional photo. They also give you about 10 or 15 minutes to shoot your own photos on their set. They are very kind. They speak enough English to get by. It's pretty much an in studio experience. Would have liked the opportunity to walk around the shrine in Kimono but we got there quite late so didn't ask and not sure they would let their pretty kimono out and about. The studio is a bit hard to find. Look for their sign at the entrance to the tiny alley way. Go early as the street leading to it is tiny and there is a lot of tourist traffic heading to the shrine. I had a concern that I'd booked the wrong service (it was called family plan but the details said kids under 13 only) I callled Headout customer service which was pretty useless. Hard to reach on the phone. I left a message and got an email but they seemed limited to a script. Not a concierge like experience. Luckily the vendor is awesome and wants you to be happy. Overall would say the curated experience itself was awesome and I would try Headout again despite the lame customer service.

If you have ever been intrigued by the mysterious world of geishas, fulfill your dream of living like a traditional maiko (an apprentice geisha) for a few hours. Studio Shiki is one of Kyoto's premier studios specializing in the authentic maiko makeover experience. You are in good hands as the professional hair & make-up artists and photographers at Studio Shiki are some of the best in their respective fields.

The Traditional Makeover

The makeup session is the first step in the transformation process. With a white powder/foundation base, red and black eyeliner, reddish eyebrows, red lipstick, and a light stroke of blush, your striking maiko look will be complete. Next comes the zen-katsura or wig-wearing session for the unique hairstyle adorned by the maikos. Step into a hand-picked kimono of your choice from an impressive collection of eye-catching colors and designs. The final step in your makeover process includes a kimono fitting session, with a matching obi (sash) and okobo (wooden sandals).

A professional photographer will guide you while taking pictures inside the studio. After your photoshoot, you will get some time to capture more photographs and videos with your camera. Although the process can go on for more than 2 hours at the very least, the result is so fabulous that it makes the experience worthwhile.

Know Before You Go

Important Information

This experience is suitable only for guests with a height of 145 cm and above. However, guests aged 5-12 with a height of 110-140cm are recommended for child plan.
This experience is not suitable for pregnant women.
Guests with skin conditions like herpes, styes, sensitive skin, and others can go for a no-makeup option.
It is required for a parent or guardian to accompany young children at all times.
It is required to carry items like personal makeup tool, foundation, and camera.
To maintain hygiene standards, we require tourists to purchase new socks with JPY429 on spot. However, visitors are welcome to bring their socks if they prefer.
The studio has 4 large wash basins, a changing room, a hairbrush, and a hairdryer.
A shower room is not available at the studio.
It is allowed to carry food and drinks inside the studio.
You will receive all the clicked pictures on the same day.
It will take 15 minutes to get dressed. However, during tourist season, weekends, and holidays, it may take an extra 30 minutes to an hour.
Please be aware that customers with allergies or skin conditions will assume any potential risks associated with their visit.
