  • Understand Portugal's 'Age of Discovery'

Jerónimos Monastery, Portugal’s Manueline masterpiece, came from maritime wealth under King Manuel I (1495-1521). Together with Belém Tower, both UNESCO sites since 1983, they mark the departure point of historic voyages. Built during Portugal's golden age, Jerónimos Monastery was funded by spice trade wealth from 1501 to 1601. Each generation of craftsmen added to its legacy, blending late Gothic precision with maritime motifs that showcase Portugal’s seafaring spirit.

Inside Santa Maria de Belém, stone columns stretch like palm trees to the ceiling. The cloisters are filled with Portugal’s story, from carved ropes and sea creatures to symbols of exploration like anchors and armillary spheres, with gargoyles peeking out from corners.

The monastery houses several significant tombs, including those of Vasco da Gama, who opened the sea route to India, and Luís de Camões, who chronicled Portugal's maritime achievements in "Os Lusíadas." Upgrade for an insightful audio guide available in English, Spanish, German, or French, compatible with both Android and iOS.
