What to expect

Royal Route through Gdańsk's Main Town

The tour follows the Royal Route through Gdańsk's Main Town, the historic heart of the Old Town. Over roughly 0.7 km and 7 stops, you move along Długa and the Long Market at an easy pace, taking in a cross-section of the city's key gates, facades, and churches.

Features

• Your self-guided audio walking tour of Gdansk Old Town is narrated stop by stop, with English audio narration explaining what you see at each location and how it fits into the story of the Royal Route.
• Walking directions between stops are built in, and an interactive GPS map with your live position shows the 0.7 km route so you always know where you are and where to go next.
• Access runs entirely in your phone browser on your smartphone, with optional use of the free Roamer app for iPhone if you prefer to walk offline after downloading the tour over Wi-Fi or mobile data in advance.
• You have 7 stops along a route of about 1 hour, with lifetime access to the tour, a flexible start time, and a fully self-paced experience, so you can replay sections or revisit the walk whenever you like.

Upland Gate and Prison Tower

You begin at the Upland Gate, one of the historic entrances to the Main Town. Just beyond it stands the Prison Tower, which frames the start of the Royal Route and hints at Gdańsk's layers of defense and reconstruction.

Features

• At this stop, the audio points out how the Upland Gate once controlled access to the city and orients you for the walk ahead into Długa and the Long Market.
• The interactive GPS map tracks your live position as you move from the Upland Gate towards the Prison Tower, following the walking directions between these first landmarks.
• Commentary highlights the Prison Tower and its role between the Upland and Golden Gates, including the Museum of Gdańsk exhibition on the rebuilding of the city after 1945 that has been shown there, with a viewing terrace included in the ticket.

Golden Gate and Długa

Passing the Prison Tower, you reach the Golden Gate and step onto Długa, the main street of the Royal Route. This stretch sets up your view into the Main Town with its dense line of townhouses and facades.

Features

• The English narration explains the Golden Gate as a ceremonial entrance and guides you along Długa, describing how the street functions as the spine of Gdańsk's Main Town.
• Walking directions lead you from the Golden Gate down Długa, while the GPS map keeps your live position overlaid on the route so you can pause or detour without losing track.
• Practical tips woven into the audio mention that Długa is paved with smooth granite, suggest sturdy shoes for nearby cobbled lanes, and recommend early morning or blue hour for quieter streets and lit facades.

Long Market and Main Town Hall

Continuing from Długa into the Long Market, you come to the Main Town Hall, one of the focal buildings on the route. The space opens into a broad square that concentrates much of the Main Town's activity.

Features

• The audio tour talks you through the Long Market as one of the busiest places in the city in high season, pointing out the Main Town Hall and its tower rising over the surrounding tenement houses.
• Using the self-guided format, you can decide whether to explore the exterior details from the square or factor in the Museum of Gdańsk information, such as the Main Town Hall and Artus Court being free on Mondays from 12:00 to 18:00 and the Town Hall observation tower closure for renovation as of September 2026.
• The GPS-linked route and browser-based access let you manage your own pace here, taking breaks or photos while the map keeps your live position in the square.

St Mary's Church

From the Long Market you loop into the lanes leading to St Mary's Church, a dominant landmark in Gdańsk's skyline. These streets shift from smooth paving to older cobbles as you approach the church.

Features

• Audio narration introduces St Mary's as a working parish church and marks it as a key point on the tour, including notes on respectful behavior, quiet voices inside, and avoiding sightseeing during Mass.
• The commentary flags practical details such as the 409 steps up St Mary's tower to the viewing platform, the tower's closure in bad weather, the parish-listed lack of entry fee for the church itself, and the daily astronomical clock figure show at 11:57.
• The walking directions and GPS map guide you through the cobbled lanes that can be slippery after rain, making it easier to navigate this short detour from the Royal Route and then return to the main axis.

Waterfront and Green Gate

The final stage takes you back towards the river and brings the Royal Route to its end at the Green Gate. Here, the Old Town's formal processional way meets the waterfront.

Features

• At the Green Gate, the audio explains its role as one of Gdańsk's key historical gates and notes that the National Museum galleries inside are closed on Mondays.
• This stop also marks a handover point: the tour confirms that your walk ends at the Green Gate, where the Waterfront walk titled "The Crane, the Shipyards, and Solidarity" begins, so the two tours can combine into one longer outing.
• Your self-guided format allows you to decide whether to continue immediately along the waterfront or pause at the river, with your lifetime access ensuring you can replay this final section whenever you return.
