Over the gate of Fort Lovrijenac a Latin line says freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world. This walk shows how Dubrovnik, the old Republic of Ragusa, kept its freedom for four and a half centuries: with trade, tribute, neutrality and very good walls.
Meet the engineers who brought the water in, the knight whose forearm was the city's measure, a head of state who served one month and could not go home, and the poet whose hymn to liberty still opens the Summer Festival. See what the earthquake of 1667 destroyed and what the city rebuilt after the siege of 1991.

12 stops on one easy walk inside the walls: Brsalje terrace, the Pile Gate and Onofrio Fountain, the Franciscan Monastery, the Stradun, Jewish Street, the Dominican Monastery, Luža Square, the Old Port, the cathedral, the Rector's Palace, Gundulić Square and the Jesuit Stairs.

City walls entry: The main city walls entrance is the stairway beside Saint Saviour just inside Pile Gate.

City walls ticket: A city walls ticket also includes entry to Fort Lovrijenac.

Lokrum boats: Boats to Lokrum Island depart from the Old Port at stop eight on your route.

Additional sites: The synagogue, Dominican cloister, and cathedral treasury require tickets and have seasonal hours.

Route steps: Expect multiple stair sections, including nearly fifty steps up the Jesuit Stairs at the end.

Harbor safety: At stop eight, the harbor quay has no railing, so keep children close, especially when the stone is wet.

City conduct rules: In the historic core, you must not walk in swimwear, go shirtless, or eat and drink near monuments.

Church etiquette: In working churches, you should dress modestly, stay quiet, and avoid moving around during Mass.

Crowds and bags: The Stradun and Luža Square get crowded at midday in high season, so keep bags zipped and in front.

Festival impact: During the Summer Festival, some squares and the Jesuit Stairs may be fenced off for evening performances.
