In 1921 Mexico's new government handed the walls of its public buildings to painters. This walk follows those walls across the historic center, from a market Rivera's students painted to a Jesuit church holding one of the very first murals, the college where Orozco painted The Trench and the ministry Rivera covered with more than two hundred panels.
Stand on Plaza Santo Domingo beside the Inquisition's palace, then walk through the city the painters grew up in: an operetta star's theater, a Spanish king on horseback, a post office with ironwork from Florence and the white marble Palacio de Bellas Artes.
Cross the Alameda, the park Rivera painted, and finish at the museum built for his Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda Central.
Eleven stops, about 2.8 km and an hour and three quarters, at your own pace in English or Spanish. Museum entry not included; the SEP courtyards and several interiors are free.
