Süleymaniye Mosque

Built between 1550 and 1557 by the imperial architect Mimar Sinan, the Süleymaniye Mosque is the largest in Istanbul and one of the most important symbols of the Ottoman Empire. Commissioned by Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, it dominates the city skyline from the Third Hill.

Architectural scale: Marvel at Sinan’s design with a central dome, flanked by four slender minarets that mark Süleyman’s status as the 10th Ottoman sultan.

Interior details: Step inside to see Iznik tiles, stained-glass windows, and Quranic inscriptions that highlight Ottoman decorative arts.

Royal tombs: Visit the mosque’s garden where the mausoleums of Sultan Süleyman and Hürrem Sultan (Roxelana) are located.

What to bring

Wear modest clothing that covers arms and legs; women must bring a headscarf to cover their hair.

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for the walking tour.

Bring a bottle of water, especially during warmer months.

What’s not allowed

Shorts, sleeveless tops, and revealing clothing are not permitted inside the mosque.

Shoes must be removed before entering the mosque.

Eating and drinking are not allowed inside the mosque.

Flash photography and loud behavior are prohibited within the mosque premises.

Accessibility

The experience is not fully wheelchair accessible due to uneven surfaces and steps in the Old City and mosque areas.

Additional information

There is no admission fee or ticket line for the Süleymaniye Mosque.

If you forget to bring a headscarf, inform your guide who can assist you in purchasing one on the way.

The tour does not include meals.
