A Venetian jewel in Rome

It all started back in the 4th century when Pope Saint Marco thought, "Why not build a basilica here?" After some makeovers over the years, Pope Paul II spruced it up in 1468, and he even named it "the church of the Venetians in Rome". San Marco Basilica boasts a Renaissance facade with an elegant portico supported by semi-columns – a real gem of the era. Behind it, you'll spot a Romanesque bell tower adorned with historic ceramics. Beneath the basilica, a surprising find during restoration work: the bones of martyrs, including those of San Marco, now resting under the main altar.
Despite its Baroque influence, you'll discover treasures from various eras, including a striking 9th-century apse mosaic.
