Shinjuku Gyoen is fifty-eight walled hectares of central Tokyo, and most visitors see only the lawn by their gate. This self-guided audio walk takes you round all of it in one ring of about 2.7 km and twelve stops, at your own pace, with no group and no fixed start time.
Start at whichever gate you arrive at. The walk begins at the first stop you reach and carries you round until you are back where you started. Two more play inside the greenhouse. The story follows the water first: the Tamagawa aqueduct of 1653, the Naito lords' pond garden of 1772, the 1872 farm laboratory that planted Japan's first plane and tulip trees, and the French garden made for the emperor in 1906. Then the cherries, about 900 trees of some 70 varieties flowering from January to late April.
Admission to the garden is not included (500 yen for adults in 2026). The garden is closed on Mondays except in cherry season and early November. Not affiliated with the Ministry of the Environment or Shinjuku Gyoen.
