After a gorgeous but chilly 30 minute boat ride out to Robin Island you feel how remote this place actually is. Our first tour guide Mapose (sp?) spoke to us about his experience while living in the prison with torture of incredibly barbaric types with such a moving story. Two have come out of what he came out of with such a positive and reinforced love of humanity is just incredible to me. He shared a lot of emotion on his sleeve. He gave us a lot of of the history of the island that I just don't know if I would've learned any other way. Then we were taken to the inside of the prison where we were shown the cells and the terrible conditions under which the people were kept. It was cold uninsulated, and downright inhumane. It's always good to look back at where we've come from, to see where we can go as human beings, and this journey was just an incredible reminder of the strength of spirit of people like Nelson Mandela, all those around him and those who came before. This Tour is a must see!

Went solo cause my friends bailed last min, but honestly—no regrets. The ferry ride over was a bit bumpy (bring a jacket if ur not into wind) but the views? EPIC. Once on the island, it’s all go-go-go, but the guide (ex-prisoner, which blew my mind) made it soooo personal. Hearing about his own time inside those walls… I was lowkey tearing up. You only get a short moment at Mandela’s cell, but it’s enough. Wish I could’ve taken pics inside but nope, not allowed. Worth every rand.

Went with my parents and teenage brother. Tour was very informative, though the bus was kinda cramped and windows fogged up. Our guide had a dry sense of humor that kept things interesting. The prison part felt heavy—kids got a bit antsy, but still learned a lot. Ferry was on time. Bring snacks, there’s nothing to buy on the island!

Traveled with my partner. The stories from the guide were INTENSE and real—he’d actually spent years there. I’ll never forget his voice echoing in those halls. The group was big (maybe 40?) but never felt lost. Ferry ride in the morning was chilly, def bring layers. Overall, a moving day.
