Inside the 13th-century Aigues Mortes’ majestic ramparts

Enter through the grand Gardette Door, one of the many entrances to the fortifications that bear witness to the countries' tumultuous past. Take a walk along the nearly mile-long stretch of carefully carved stone walls, admiring the well-preserved medieval architecture. Learn about the Catholic-Protestant struggles that once roiled French society, and how the ramparts witnessed these historical events.

Beyond the fortified walls: towers, doors & hidden stories

Marvel at the 20 towers that grace Aigues Mortes' skyline, including the Tower of Constance — a stalwart structure that served as a prison for Protestant dissidents in the 19th century. Explore the several entrances dotting the walls such as the Gardette Door, each with its own story to tell. As you look closely, spot the ancient imprints of projectiles fired during numerous conflicts, and imagine the over 700 years of French military history that unfolded within these walls.

If you are driving towards Towers and Walls of Aigues-Mortes, Take D570, D38C and D58 to Gare des Pêcheurs in Aigues-Mortes from Arles. It is 48-minute drive to the attraction.

If you are driving towards Towers and Walls of Aigues-Mortes, Take Quai des Tanneurs, Quai du Verdanson, Av. Jean Mermoz and Av. Pierre Mendès-France to D66 from Montpellier. It is 39-minute drive to the attraction.
