Stepping along the ancient walls of the Moorish Castle is like touching history itself. The sweeping views of Sintra, the Atlantic, and the surrounding forests are truly awe-inspiring. We visited in the first week of October, when the crowds had thinned and the air was cooler, the perfect setting for slow exploration and quiet reflection. It’s a climb that rewards not only with vistas but with a sense of perspective, a reminder of time’s passage and human resilience. Bring good shoes, a bit of water, and time to simply stand, breathe, and take in the beauty that stretches endlessly in every direction.

It was such a beautiful castle and felt like such a fairytale experience. The timed entries made for a really easy and relaxed entrance into the castle (despite our entry slot being fully booked) and the only place in the castle with queues was when waiting for the Initiation Well, but even that moved quickly (although they do hurry you along to keep the line moving so not heaps of time for photos). We spent about 2 hours exploring the grounds and it was the perfect amount of time to touch all the highlights and make it back into town for some lunch. Can't wait to return!!

The ease of having the combo of the two sites was great and we LOVED our visit. The views were amazing. The Audio portion of the adventure proved to be a challenge with the head out app. We used it successfully with Moorish, but we could not access the Pena Palace. We did however use the FREE audio offered on site. Recommendations would be to arrive at Pena one hour prior to booking time. Once you get in the first gate, tour the grounds and then line up for your scheduled entry tour time 30 minutes before. We thought we were "in the tour" after the first entry point.

What to expect

Moorish Castle

Built in the 8th century and soon taken over by the Christians after the fall of Lisbon in 1147, every aspect of the Moorish Castle speaks of its centuries-long history. From its most prominent feature, the castle walls, to the watchtower, the museum, and the interpretation centre, the Moorish Castle has a lot to offer.

Second Ring of Walls: Take in the second line of walls built around the castle by the Knights Templar after its capture by Afonso Henriques.

Silos: Crater-like pits that were used to store crops and harvest, you must explore how these essentials were stored at the castle for extended durations.

Church of São Pedro de Canaferrim: Explore this church built following the conquest of the Moors. and take a close look at its stone masonry and Gothic paintings.

Quinta da Regaleira

What to bring

Moorish Castle

The experience is not fully wheelchair accessible due to uneven terrain and historic structures.

There is parking for disabled persons.

Quinta da Regaleira

Most places are wheelchair accessible via ramps and elevators, but the palace’s historic nature can make some areas hard to access.
