Lovely comfortable boat with excellent information provided by the guide.We saw two whales, lots of dolphins, seals and albatrosses.It was a fabulous experience to see the whales diving and the commentary by the guides was interesting and knowledgeable.I thoroughly enjoyed the trip .

Professional and welcoming team. Good explanations, new where to go to spot whales. Had plenty of time and spotted 5 whales (blue whale, #2 humpback and #2 sperm whales) - this is the place to go for whale spotting out of Kaikoura

We have been twice now. Enjoyed the trip on the boat, great crew and commentary. Got great photos. Plenty of sea life including the whales. Kaikoura is a special place.

Our experience began with the easy to book website and got better and better. The highlight was viewing four sperm whales and amazing leaping dolphins followed by an acrobatic display from a supremely energetic humpback in a blue blue sea and the background of the glorious snowy kaikouras. Our experience was complemented by a friendly informative direct commentary not a pre recorded one. Staff were all friendly and helpful and safety was never in question. Nga mihi Whalewatch.

Emily, who was our information guide, was absolutely amazing. Her love and passion for her job really shone through the whole trip. I was lucky that it was a calm day out on the water and we were able to see both whales and dusky dolphins. It was one of the most enjoyable days I've had in a long time, and I've always been a bit frightened of open water. I felt safe and loved it 🥰

Getting started

Arrive at the Whaleway Station 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time for check-in. Present your ticket at the counter and receive a brief safety orientation. You'll then board the modern catamaran, designed specifically for whale watching with noise-minimizing engines that don't disturb the wildlife.

What to expect

Kaikoura is one of the few places on earth where sperm whales can be seen year-round, thanks to the unique underwater canyon just offshore.

Expert guides use specialized equipment to locate whales, giving you a 95% chance of spotting these magnificent creatures.

The spacious viewing decks offer 360-degree views, ensuring you don't miss a moment when whales surface.

The "World of the Whales" presentation provides fascinating insights into whale behavior, biology, and conservation. The onboard live commentary explains what you're seeing and educates you about marine conservation efforts.

Keep your camera ready for other marine wildlife often spotted during cruises, including dolphins, seals, and various seabirds.

You'll spend approximately 2 hours on the water, with the entire experience lasting 2.5 hours from departure to return.

If you're booking seating in the VIP Captain's cabin, please make a note of any food allergies at the time of booking so these can be catered for accordingly.

Whale sightings are not guaranteed. However, if no whales are observed during the tour, 80% of the tour cost will be refunded. For clarity, 'whale' encompasses all species defined as such under the Marine Mammals Protection Regulations 1992, including baleen, sperm, beaked, killer, and pilot whales.
