Fushimi Inari's thousands of vermilion gates climb a whole mountain, and the mountain has a story. War burned the shrine, on the mountain and below, in 1468. The gods of the peaks moved down to the hall at the foot, and ordinary people filled the empty slopes with gates and stones.
Start at the great torii by JR Inari station, pass Hideyoshi's Romon gate and the main hall, and walk the twin tunnels of the Senbon Torii. Try the heavy-light stones at the inner shrine, clap at the Echo Pond, and climb to the Yotsutsuji crossroads for the view. From there, loop through the valley of offerings at Gozendani, up a long stone staircase to the 233 m summit, and down over the second and third peaks, past a stone gate whose braces meet like praying hands.
Eleven stops, about 2.7 km to the last stop plus the way down, at your own pace, in English. More than 200 m of climbing, much of it on stone steps; turn back at Yotsutsuji if you like. Allow 2 to 3 hours.

- Duration: Allow about two to three hours to complete the loop and return.
- Best time to visit: Aim for an early weekday morning to avoid crowds on the lower paths.

- Daylight: Start with enough daylight to finish the loop and walk back down safely.
- Night access: Paths are open day and night, but upper trail lighting is not confirmed, so avoid starting late.
- Getting there (JR): From Kyoto Station, take the JR Nara Line to Inari Station; all local and rapid trains stop there.
- JR station landmark: From JR Inari Station, walk across the narrow one-way street to the large torii gate.
- Getting there (Keihan): From Keihan Fushimi-Inari Station, walk about 5 minutes to reach the shrine.
- Toilets on route: Toilets are near the Romon, beside the Okusha, between Okusha and Kumataka-sha, and at Gozendani.

- Wildlife caution: Wild boars are present on the mountain, so never approach or feed any wild animals or birds.
- Elevation and effort: The walk involves more than 200 meters of ascent, much of it on stone steps.
- Wet weather: Stone becomes slippery after rain, so take extra care and turn back at Yotsutsuji if unsure about continuing.
- Senbon Torii etiquette: In the Senbon Torii tunnels, keep moving with the flow and step aside outside for photos.
