Museo Casa Kahlo (Red House)
Opened in September 2025 in the Kahlo family's historic Red House in Coyoacán, Museo Casa Kahlo is the only museum dedicated to the private family world and early life of Frida Kahlo, curated by her descendants.
Features
-
Family gallery: A corridor of antique photographs taken by Guillermo Kahlo traces the family's lineage, introducing Frida's parents, sisters, and nieces before you step further into the house.
-
Guillermo Kahlo's legacy: Explore his photographic negatives, cameras, and paintings he gifted to Frida, revealing how deeply her father's artistic eye shaped her own.
-
Frida's only known mural: Preserved in the family kitchen, the mural depicts a young grapefruit tree and is the only wall painting Frida ever created. The tree itself now grows in the courtyard outside.
-
Frida's private basement: A candlelit basement refuge where Frida wrote, painted, and retreated which is also never seen by the public before this museum opened. Her original desk, paints, dolls, and a microscope for studying insects are displayed here.
-
Family letters and archive: Personal correspondence between Frida and her family, displayed as projections, audio recordings, and wallpaper throughout the rooms.
-
Personal artifacts & clothing: Frida's beaded chaquiras blouse, Tehuana dresses, and personal jewelry are displayed here, offering a close look at the style she made iconic.
-
Los Fridos gallery: A dedicated room with works by Frida's closest students alongside archival footage of them painting, revealing a little-known chapter of her life as a teacher.
A must for anyone who wants to know Frida beyond the paintings.
