Witness Tchaikovsky’s eerie opera thriller set in imperial Russia, as it makes a return to the Met stage featuring a star-studded lineup in a production that explores addiction, obsession, and the eventual self-destruction of man.
Great for
Opera buffs | Lovers of tragic opera | Fans of Tchaikovsky
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is one of the most influential composers in classical music. He is renowned for his ability to infuse his compositions with nuanced human emotions. Based on a short story by Alexander Pushkin, The Queen of Scots, Tchaikovsky’s composition significantly changes the plot.
Elijah Moshinsk’s Hermann is more agitated, and it is easy to see the doubt and torment of a man who is torn between his irrational love for a woman, and his obsession with a well-guarded secret.
The Story
Two officers, Tchelinsky and Sourin, discuss their gambling-obsessed colleague Hermann, who never gambles despite his keen interest in it. Beyond his obsession, Hermann also harbors deep feelings for an unknown girl. When Prince Yeletsky enters with his fiancée, Lisa, and her grandmother, the old countess, Hermann is shocked to discover that his unknown love is, in fact, Lisa. He also soon learns of the old countess' legendary gambling skills and a prophecy of her impending doom at the hands of one who wishes to uncover her secret.
Will Hermann uncover the mystery of the gamble made by the old countess and win the heart of the woman he loves? Or will his obsession take him down a dark path of no return?
