The tour itself was enjoyable. The guide was very knowledgeable and his English was good. However the organisation was poor. As requested, we arrived 15 minutes before the scheduled start time but the tour didn't actually begin until almost an hour later. As the first part of the tour consisted of a rather long section covering the history of Turkey, there was too much standing around. This could be a serious issue on a hot day, or for anyone who is not young & fit. Once we got going the mosque visits were excellent and it was great to miss the queues. The guide had genuine enthusiasm and really brought the history and architecture alive. So on balance a 5 star tour but with only 2 or 3 star organisation.

Wir hatten mit Alex einen tollen Guide. Er hat uns vieles zur Blauen Moschee und der Hagia Sophia erzählt. Trotz der etwas längeren Wartezeit am Einlass verging die Zeit schnell. Er hat immer geschaut, dass alle beisammen waren. Preis und Leistung waren super. Einziger Minuspunkt: Die Kommunikation zu Anfang der Tour war ein bisschen durcheinander. Da wusste man nicht so genau, was jetzt passiert.

Nous avons eu un excellent guide pour visiter la Mosquée Bleue et Sainte-Sophie dont je rêvais depuis près de dix ans. Il était très sympa, drôle, pertinent et très récéptif aux questions / commentaires. La mosquée bleue est une réelle pépite dont je ne connaissais pas grand chose avant de la voir, à l'inverse je connaissais plutôt bien l'histoire de Sainte-Sophie, elle est aussi incroyable que ce que j'espérais.

First of all i would like to mention the guide that took us to Sultanahmet Mosque and Hagia Sophia. She was very well prepared with the information that provided us, spoke a very fluent english and was very helpful in all the matters related to the tour. I also appreciated a lot the fact that she gave us ear devices, like head-phones so that we could hear her very well amid the noise of the street. She told us many many things not only about the hystorical background of the places we visited but also information related to Istanbul culture, everyday life etc. Unfortunately i did not understand her name to mention it here. She was opened to jokes and free-talk, very social and open-minded. I liked her a lot, that is the way a toursit guide has to be in related to tourists. Second, the places we visited were absolutely fantastic. I liked Hagia Sophia and its enormous size, but what truly impressed me was the Blue Mosque and the fact that we had to take-off our shoes inside the Mosque gave a sense of equality between all people. It was splendid. Next time i come to Istanbul i want to deepen my visit in the city, since now i spent only a few hours and did not have much time to visit the city itself.

What to bring

Carry a lightweight scarf or shawl so you can cover up appropriately before entering.

Blue Mosque

Bring a modest covering such as a wrap or headscarf, as you will need it inside the mosque.

Oversized bags and bulky backpacks are not permitted past security.

Large bags are restricted at the entrance, so plan to bring only small personal items.

Only the ground level is accessible for wheelchair users, since the upper gallery cannot be reached with mobility aids.

Hagia Sophia

Women and men should avoid clothing that exposes shoulders or chest, and skirts or shorts above the knees.

Scarves and cover-ups can be purchased on-site if you do not have your own.

Expect a mandatory security check. Lines can be long, especially midday, so later hours after 4 pm are often smoother.

If you plan to use the audio guide, remember to bring your own headphones.

The first-floor prayer hall is reserved exclusively for Turkish citizens.

Opening hours are 9 am to 7:30 pm. On Fridays it closes temporarily from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm.

Blue Mosque

Ensure you follow the modest dress requirements. If you forget a scarf or cover-up, you can purchase one at the entrance.

Visiting times are available until 11 am and then again after 2 pm. On Fridays, entry is only permitted after 2 pm.
