The Berlin Wall was never one wall. On Bernauer Strasse it began as a row of house fronts and a coil of barbed wire, and grew into a layered machine of walls, lamps, fences and towers. This is the one place in Berlin where a stretch of it survives with every part.
Start at Nordbahnhof, a ghost station with a door in each half of the city. Walk the old patrol path past the Window of Remembrance, the preserved strip between its two steel walls and a watchtower, and the Chapel of Reconciliation, rebuilt from the rubble of a church blown up in 1985.
Follow the border line to the house where Tunnel 29 ended and the corner where a young border policeman jumped the wire, then climb into the Mauerpark beside a surviving inner wall that is now open to graffiti.
Twelve stops, about 2.2 km and 75 minutes, at your own pace, in English. A few steps at one point, with a ramp beside them. All memorial sites on the route are free.

What to bring

Ticket code: Enter your ticket code on the Roamer redemption page before you set off, while you still have signal.

Phone and earphones: Bring a fully charged smartphone and earphones to follow the self-guided audio tour.

Data or Wi-Fi: Use mobile data on the walk, or open the tour on Wi-Fi before you start if you do not have data.

Weather gear: Wear weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes for the 2.2 km outdoor route.

What's not allowed

Respect the memorial: Do not climb on the walls, steel tracings, or watchtower marker, and do not add graffiti outside the park wall.

Accessibility

Wheelchair support: Wheelchairs and folding seats can be borrowed free of charge at the Visitor Center desk.

Steps on route: Between stops 8 and 9, three steps have a handrail; a parallel pavement offers an alternative if needed.

Mauerpark access: The climb into the Mauerpark uses a zigzag ramp with no steps for step-free access.

Additional information

Tour access: The audio tour opens in your phone browser, and you do not need to download an app.

Best visiting time: Walk between 10am and 5pm Tuesday to Sunday so indoor sites and the chapel are usually open.

Monday visit: On Mondays, indoor sites are closed, but the outdoor memorial remains open from 8am to 10pm.

Daylight only: Walk in daylight, since the memorial closes at 10pm and the Mauerpark above the gate is dark at night.

Visitor Center: The Visitor Center and Documentation Center open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 6pm and close on Mondays.

Observation tower: The free observation tower at the Documentation Center closes with last ascent at 5.45pm.

Chapel of Reconciliation: The chapel is usually free and open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm, with a short noon prayer on weekdays.

Nordbahnhof exhibition: The ghost-station exhibition at Nordbahnhof S-Bahn station is free during station opening hours.

How to get there: Reach the start via S-Bahn to Nordbahnhof, tram M10, bus 247, or nearby U8 and U6 stations.

Construction note: Expect a temporary covered walkway outside Nordbahnhof S-Bahn exit and check bvg.de or sbahn.berlin for updates.

Route crossings: Use signal crossings where provided and look both ways at streets without lights along the route.

Mauerpark renovations: Parts of the Mauerpark path and slope are under renovation into 2027 and may be fenced at times.

Alternative end point: If paths are fenced, you can end the walk at the top of the zigzag ramp with the wall still in view.

Pickpocket warning: On busy Sundays in Mauerpark, keep your bag closed and carried in front of you.

Behavior in chapel: Treat the Chapel of Reconciliation as a working church and visit quietly.

Extra walking: You can continue walking through the Mauerpark northwards to Gleimstrasse after the tour ends.

Crowd patterns: Weekday mornings are usually quiet, while Sundays bring lively flea market and karaoke crowds to the park.
