The monastery was amazing and well worth a visit, with beautiful buildings and history. The queue was quite long, which was fine, however there were three separate queues and no signage to say what they were for until you got to the front. We therefore queued for 30 mins to be told rather rudely that we were in the wrong one, so we had to join another queue for another 40 mins. The security/entry staff were brusque and barely communicated, which spoilt the shortened until we were finally able to get inside.

The ticket combo allows you to visit 3 of the must see sights of Lisbon. It is highly recommended to buy tickets in advance as the lines at the ticket counters can be very long. We saved at least 1-2 hours getting them with this combo, pricing is also lower than purchasing them on site. The monuments themselves are very impressive, the architecture, the history is memorable, especially for the cathedral and the monastery. The local peacocks at the castle were a nice surprise!

Loved the monastery architecture. Didn't like the way the entry queue was managed- we were there in our queue at 10.30am promptly , but lots of large groups were allowed in ahead of us ( hundreds of people) possibly tour buses or student parties, meaning those with prebooked tickets got soaked in very heavy rain.
    • Find the tomb of Vasco da Gama inside the Jerónimos Monastery, the renowned Portuguese explorer who discovered the sea route to India in 1498.

    • Go to the Chapter House, which features a rib-vaulted ceiling and walls. This space was historically used for meetings and ceremonies by the monks.

    • At the National Museum of Ancient Art, see paintings such as "The Temptation of Saint Anthony" as well as ancient figurines of the Torso of Apollo.

    • See over 5,000 artworks by Portuguese painters and photographs by notable artists like Abel Manta at National Museum of Contemporary Art.

    • Fun fact: The monastery's architecture incorporates nautical elements such as ropes, anchors, and sea monsters, reflecting the country's seafaring prowess.

Headout did not offer a senior discount which I found out was available in person. Also, I paid a premium to get an early ticket. Once I paid for the ticket, I got an email saying it could take 2 hours to process that ticket. Had it actually taken 2 hours, I would not even had my ticket for the early entry I bought. Luckily, the ticket came in time.

    Jerónimos Monastery

Obtain tickets to visit the Jerónimos Monastery, an esteemed national monument designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, situated close to Lisbon. Within its walls, the church has been revered as a monument to local luminaries like Luís de Camões and Vasco da Gama. Observe mythical creatures such as gargoyles and marine animals intricately carved into the columns, arches, and other decorative elements throughout the monastery. National Museum of Ancient Art

The National Museum of Ancient Art boasts a diverse collection of over 40,000 artworks and cultural artifacts, making it a must-visit destination for those intrigued by Portuguese art from the Middle Ages to the early 19th century. It stands as one of the country's premier museums.

Discover masterpieces by renowned Portuguese artists such as Nuno Gonçalves and Vasco Fernandes, alongside Flemish paintings by the likes of Bosch and Rubens. Be sure to observe prints and drawings from prominent figures like Dürer and Rembrandt. The museum also showcases decorative arts, including pottery, textiles, and metalwork.

During your visit, don't overlook the 15th-century St. Vincent Panels and the extraordinary solid gold Cross of Dom Sancho I, both of which are significant highlights of the museum's collection.

    National Museum of Contemporary Art

Established in 1911, the National Museum of Contemporary Art initially housed its collection within the ruins of the São Francisco da Cidade monastery, heavily damaged during the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The museum proudly features renowned pieces by celebrated artists including Rodin, Abel Manta, and Adriano Sousa Lopes. As you wander through the galleries, you'll encounter a wide array of artistic styles spanning from the late 19th century to the present day.
