Dublin Hop-on Hop-off tours: At a glance

A Dublin Hop-on Hop-off tour is a way to connect the city’s sights without puzzling over bus routes. Open-top buses follow one or more routes with unlimited hops, linking Trinity College, Dublin Castle, the Guinness Storehouse, and Kilmainham Gaol. Multiple operators offer 24-hour, 48-hour, and 72-hour passes, and selected tours add extras such as river cruises or museum entry.

How it works: Your pass starts when scanned and lets you hop on and off at any stop.

What's included: Most tours include route access, open-top seating, multilingual audio guides, and a route map.

Flexibility: Stay onboard for a full loop or use buses as easy links between chosen sights.

Operators: Dublin Hop-on Hop-off routes are run by operators such as Big Bus, City Sightseeing, and DoDublin.

Dublin tour highlight for first-time visitors

First-time visitors

Trying to link Dublin’s stories, from the Book of Kells at Trinity College to pub-filled Temple Bar and peaceful St. Stephen’s Green, can feel like a puzzle of buses and side streets. A Hop-on Hop-off loop connects these areas in one circuit, with onboard audio commentary and 24-hour or 48-hour passes so you can ride between them at your own pace.

Dublin tour highlight for solo travelers

Solo travelers

Navigating unfamiliar Dublin Bus routes alone between O’Connell Street, Grafton Street and Dublin Castle means constant map-checking and second-guessing stops. A Hop-on Hop-off ticket swaps that for clearly marked sightseeing stops, audio or live commentary, and simple unlimited reboarding.

Dublin tour option for budget travelers

Budget travelers

In Dublin, separate bus fares and occasional taxis can quickly add up. A Hop-on Hop-off pass gives unlimited rides on open-top buses for 24 or 48 hours, bundling transport and sightseeing commentary.

Dublin tour option for families

Families

Getting tired kids and folded strollers out to Phoenix Park and Dublin Zoo is tiring on regular buses. Hop-on Hop-off routes stop near family spots, with open-top seating, a covered lower deck and flexible passes.

Dublin tour option for art and history enthusiasts

Art & history enthusiasts

Reaching serious history sites like Kilmainham Gaol, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the Dublin Writers Museum by standard buses can be fiddly. Hop-on Hop-off services stitch these landmarks into a single route with live or recorded commentary.

The ideal Hop-on Hop-off pass duration for your Dublin trip

24-hour pass

Best if you have just one full sightseeing day in Dublin, or you want an orientation loop plus a couple of headline stops. Realistically, you can ride one complete circuit and explore 1–2 big attractions such as Guinness Storehouse, Trinity College, or Kilmainham Gaol without rushing too hard. Big Bus, DoDublin, and City Sightseeing all offer 24-hour Hop-on Hop-off passes. Some 24-hour options bundle extras like a Dublin River cruise or Guinness Storehouse entry.

48-hour pass

Well-suited to weekend stays, families, and anyone who prefers a less compressed schedule. With 48 hours, you can split the city into zones: for example, one day for Guinness Storehouse, Kilmainham Gaol, and Phoenix Park, and another for Trinity College, Dublin Castle, and the Docklands. Big Bus, DoDublin, and City Sightseeing all run 48-hour Hop-on Hop-off passes. Certain 48-hour tickets add inclusions such as a Dublin River cruise, Little Museum of Dublin entry, a night tour, or Guinness Storehouse tickets.

72-hour pass

Best if you are in Dublin for several days and want the bus as a flexible “backbone” rather than a one-off tour. You can space out sightseeing, repeat favourite stretches of the route, or combine lighter bus days with museum visits and easy walks. City Sightseeing offers 72-hour Hop-on Hop-off passes, including variants that pair the bus with a Dublin River cruise. This duration suits slower travellers, older visitors, or anyone planning multiple shorter sightseeing sessions.

Tips to make the most of your Hop-on Hop-off Dublin tour

  • Do one full circuit before committing to stops : Stay on from O’Connell Street past Kilmainham, Phoenix Park and the Docklands once, noting traffic bottlenecks and opening times, then decide which two or three places deserve longer hop-offs.

  • Use the bus for long jumps, walk the compact centre : Use your pass mainly for the longer legs out to Guinness Storehouse, Kilmainham Gaol and Phoenix Park, then link Trinity College, Dublin Castle, Temple Bar and St Stephen’s Green on foot so you are not “spending” rides on five-minute hops.

  • Match the route to your priorities : Before booking, glance at each operator’s map to confirm it stops at your non‑negotiables, like Guinness Storehouse or Kilmainham, and that a central boarding point lies within a straightforward walk from your hotel.

  • Use combos and durations strategically : If you know you want Guinness Storehouse or a river cruise, choose selected tours bundling these with a 24-hour or 48-hour pass, but skip combos that duplicate entries included on any Dublin Explorer–type attraction pass.

  • Plan around Dublin’s changeable weather : Pack layers and a light rain jacket so you can enjoy the upper deck between showers, then duck into indoor stops like museums or the Guinness Storehouse when squalls roll through, especially in winter afternoons.

  • Time your hops around proper pub meals : Use midday hop-offs near Grafton Street or Capel Street to try Irish stew, coddle or fish and chips, and save Temple Bar pints for atmosphere rather than every pricey lunch or dinner.

  • Plan a central finish in the evening : Hop off your last bus near Grafton or Nassau Street for knitwear, Celtic jewellery and bookshops, then stroll to nearby Temple Bar or Dame Street pubs without clock-watching for final departures.

Frequently asked questions about Hop-on Hop-off tour Dublin

  • Most Dublin Hop-on Hop-off passes activate when your ticket is first scanned on board, not when you buy it. They are typically valid for a continuous 24-hour, 48-hour, or 72-hour period; always check your specific ticket for exact validity.

  • Yes, you can usually board at any official stop along your chosen operator’s route. Because each company has its own stop network, use the map or app linked in your ticket to confirm the nearest valid starting point.

  • Bus frequency and hours vary by operator and season, but most Dublin Hop-on Hop-off services run roughly every 15–30 minutes. Typical operating times are around 9am–5pm or 9am–7pm; always check the current timetable for your travel dates.

  • Most Dublin Hop-on Hop-off buses have low-floor access with a ramp and at least one wheelchair space on the lower deck, but capacity is limited. Foldable strollers are allowed and may need to be collapsed; policies can differ by operator.

  • Child ticket rules vary by operator, but most Dublin Hop-on Hop-off companies offer discounted fares for children, and some allow one child to ride free with each paying adult. Always check age bands and specific conditions in your ticket details.

  • Pet policies differ by operator, but regular pets are often not permitted on Dublin Hop-on Hop-off buses. Registered assistance or guide dogs are generally allowed; if you plan to travel with an animal, confirm the rules with your operator beforehand.

  • Hotel pick-ups are not usually included with Dublin Hop-on Hop-off tours. Buses operate from fixed city stops, so you’ll need to make your own way to a convenient stop using walking, local buses, trams, or a taxi.

  • If you miss a bus at a stop, wait for the next one on the same route; in Dublin this is typically 15–30 minutes. Missing the last bus means continuing your journey by city bus, tram, or taxi instead.

  • Most Dublin Hop-on Hop-off tours operate in light rain, with a lower deck available if open-top seating is wet or windy. In severe weather, operators may close upper decks or adjust services, so check for updates before travelling.

  • Most Dublin Hop-on Hop-off buses do not have onboard restrooms, so plan toilet breaks at attractions, cafés, or pubs along the route. Small snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are fine, but hot food, alcohol, smoking, and vaping are generally not allowed.

The Bus Drivers were very friendly, helpful & funny. Nice to be able to jump on for 4 or 5 stops, then get off and have a wander around, and then jump back on later by keeping an eye on the app for when the next bus was due. Also loved the Guinness Storehouse tour, lots to see and do, and a pint of Guinness with your picture on it - what more could you need!

The Guinness Storehouse was great, but we never did figure out how to use our bus pass that we paid for. Our hotel clerk told us how to use it, but we didn't get to check in until 3:00 and the buses quit working at 5, so that was a waste of money.
