What is the Grand Egyptian Museum?
Spread across 480,000 square meters in Cairo, the Grand Egyptian Museum will be the largest archeological museum in the world. Devoted entirely to the glory of Pharaonic civilization, the museum will feature around 100,000 objects in the collection, all being unearthed treasures from times past. The museum aims to place Egypt in the center of a worldwide hub for Pharaonic history.
Why Visit the Grand Egyptian Museum?
The museum overlooks the Giza Plateau and is nestled in between the Great Pyramids and the modern city of Cairo, amidst two of Egypt’s contrasting characters: dry desert and fertile floodplain. The museum, in addition to offering visitors an educational and cultural experience by showcasing the unique legacy of an ancient civilization, also affords them gorgeous views of the Pyramids. A visit here is essential for history buffs fascinated by the dazzling mask of Ancient Egypt.
The Grand Egyptian Museum Design and Construction
Designed by Dublin-based architects Heneghan Peng, the building has a main facade about 800 m long with heights reaching 40 m at some points. Its shape resembles a geometric structure where triangular forms prevail, evoking the image of the nearby pyramids. The slant of the roof aligns with the axis of the pyramids, conceptually linking modern Cairo and Egypt’s ancient history. The museum park will feature sculpture gardens, while an enormous statue of Ramses the Great will be located in the atrium. The grand staircase behind, which leads from valley level to plateau, will house 87 statues of pharaohs and Egyptian gods.
The Galleries of Grand Egyptian Museum
The main galleries to the right of the grand staircase are divided into four parts that chronologically trace Pharaonic history. These are predynastic and Old Kingdom | Middle Kingdom | New Kingdom and Greco-Roman. These areas will further be divided into thematic sections such as society, beliefs, the funerary world, and more. The collections harbored within these dazzling galleries will allow visitors to fully discover the prominence of an ancient civilization.
King Tutankhamun’s Gallery
To the left of the grand staircase lies the museum’s highly anticipated Tutankhamun galleries which will display, for the first time ever, the entire collection unearthed from the tomb of the Boy King. The relics are displayed in the exact order that Howard Carter discovered them in the tomb. Tutankhamun’s outer coffin will be on display, alongside his two inner coffins. Unlike the old museum, which simply displayed the treasures, over here a narrative will be established which will aim to demonstrate King Tut's lifestyle.
Grand Egyptian Museum Services
In addition to grand exhibition spaces expected to house 100,000 objects, the museum will have fully operational and sophisticated laboratories, research centers, conference rooms, classrooms, an auditorium, archive and storage areas, a children's museum, a conservation center, etc. It will also include rest areas, eight restaurants, 28 gift shops, 3D cinema, and extensive gardens inspired by pharaonic civilization.
