Why You Should Watch Rusalka
Why You Should Watch Rusalka
Rusalka serves as a testament to Dvořák’s musical mastery of both melody and orchestration. It features one of the most popular arias in opera - Song to the Moon. This all-new production is conducted by ENO debutant Antony Hermus and is directed by ‘Opernwelt Director of the Year 2013’ Tatjana Gürbaca.
The show transcends the world of a simple fairy-tale opera, emerging instead as a mesmerizing work of art with striking visuals and memorable music. A fantastic orchestra is led by Debus, who always puts a lot of thought behind every element of the opera. It features sets that constantly morph and interchange to create a highly realistic world. There is a perfect balance between the singers as well as the actors, giving a beautiful blend of powerful physical acting and sonically pleasing singing. A show that is as twisted as it is captivating, Rusalka has themes of love and betrayal and will leave you reflecting on the dark side of humanity.
The cast is led by Corinne Winters who plays the title role. This is her first show at ENO, after debuting in the UK as Violetta in La Traviata, back in 2013. The Prince is played by Olivier Award nominee David Butt Philip and the Water Spirit is portrayed by theatre veteran David Soar. Mezzo-soprano Patricia Bardon and soprano Claire Rutter reprise their roles as Ježibaba and the Foreign Princess respectively. The cast is completed by ace ENO Harewood Artists Idunnu Münch, Katie Coventry, Katie Stevenson, and Nadine Benjamin.
The Story
Rusalka comprises three distinct acts that represent desire, betrayal, and redemption. In the first act, a Water-Nymph named Rusalka falls in love with a prince. With the help of a witch, she transforms into a human but is forced to give up her immortality and ability to speak. The prince also falls in love with Rusalka, and the two are set to be married in the days to come. Unfortunately, a jealous Foreign Princess curses the couple, and Rusalka is forced to return to the lake as an eternally damned spirit of death. Will her prince save her from damnation? Find out in this enthralling new take on the fairy tale!
