Speaking directly to the heart of a country torn by war, Heroes of the Fourth Turning is a compassionate rendering of a community in flux, living lives of quiet desperation.
Why Watch Imagining Madoff
Why Watch Imagining Madoff
Heroes of the Fourth Turning explores the rage buried deep within a country’s widening void of ideologies. Written by Will Arbery and directed by Danya Taymor, the play offers clarity in a carefully studied political reality. Set in real-time, in a late-night scenario, Arbery skillfully twists the fact that in a country of polar interests, there can be a menacing void in between. The characters are frighteningly bold in voicing their political ideals, yet few remain internally conflicted, wondering how far they can deviate from the conventional methods of their chosen side without triggering any social repercussions. The transgression of the play is that it doesn’t tell the audience to feel or think in a particular way about what they just experienced, rather allowing them to wrestle with their thoughts.
The Story
A small catholic school in Wyoming has just inaugurated Gina as its first female president. Four young conservatives reunite for a backyard barbeque to toast to her. What then unfurls is spiritual chaos and clashing of generational politics, turning this reunion into less of a celebration and more of a vicious argument. The play is an accurate representation of what a conversation between conservatives would look like in the absence of liberals. Set in the heart of a country that remains at war with itself, this haunting play shines light on matters of education and intellectualism and how conservatives weaponise them.
