About Oskar Schindler's Factory
Located in Krakow, Poland, Oskar Schindler’s factory is a museum commemorating the Holocaust during World War II. It honors Schindler’s actions that saved the lives of 1,200 Jews, giving visitors a somber yet educational experience.
The factory that became known as Oskar Schindler’s factory originally belonged to three Jewish-Polish businessmen. Schindler gained ownership of the plant as part of Nazi policy that seized Jewish property and transferred its ownership to non-Jews.
Originally an enamelware factory, Schindler started producing ammunition shells during World War II to ensure it remained essential to war efforts, allowing him to continue employing and rescuing Jews.
In 1945, Schindler successfully established a sub-camp of Plaszow concentration camp within the factory’s premises, based on the argument that it would save the workers’ time spent walking the 10 kilometres from the camp to the factory and increase the factory’s output.
Schindler’s wife Emilie was crucial in his efforts to rescue Jews. On one instance, she managed to save over 100 men who were being transported to Auschwitz by convincing the Nazi authorities that the men were needed to work in the factory.
After World War II, between 1948 and 2002, the factory was used by a telecommunications equipment manufacturing company. It was only after this that the factory was converted to house two museums – the Historical Museum of Kraków, which includes Schindler's Factory, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków.

Survivors’ photographs
Located in the former cleaner’s rooms, is one of the most poignant displays, comprising more than 200 photographs of the Jewish workers employed at the factory who survived World War II thanks to Schindler’s rescue efforts. Set in window panes on the wall, the photos give a sense of the number of lives Schindler managed to save.
Survivors’ Ark
Across from Schindler’s desk is the “Survivors’ Ark”, an installation made of thousands of enameled pots like the ones manufactured at the factory during the war. It symbolizes the plight of Krakow’s Jewish workers under Nazi occupation and Schindler’s heroism in protecting and rescuing the lives of his employees.
Railway station waiting room
Explore the replica of a railway station waiting room from 1939, complete with wooden benches, vintage signage, posters about troop mobilization, the belongings of soldiers, and an imitation window with video footage of scenes from the era. This exhibit provides a realistic portrayal of the pre-war environment in Krakow as the country anticipated the Nazi invasion.

The exhibit includes the authentic interiors of a tram car with wooden benches, daily contemporary newspapers, and four imitation windows playing newsreels depicting daily life and German propaganda.
Gates of Plaszow concentration camp
One of the most stark artifacts at the museum is the original preserved gateway to Plaszow, first a labour and then a concentration camp. Gravel strewn across the room evokes the atmosphere of a labour camp, transporting visitors right back to wartime Krakow under Nazi occupation.
Hall of Choices
One of the last exhibits is the Hall of Choices, a sculptural installation depicting the wartime stories and emotions of the people. These include resistance fighters and ordinary citizens who opposed the Nazi regime as well as informers and those who collaborated with the regime. This installation symbolizes the choices people made during the occupation as well as the human capacity for both good and evil.

The museums housed at Oskar Schindler's factory can be accessed through the main gate located on Lipowa Street, Krakow. Visitors can access the reception area, restrooms, cloakroom, and the museum shop located here along with the ticket office.
Last entry: 1.5 hours before closing
Closed on: Schindler's Factory is closed on the first Tuesday of every month. In 2024, it will also remain closed on 6th February, 5th March, 31st March, 2nd April, 3rd May, 7th May, 30th May, 4th June, 2nd July, 6th August, 15th August, 3rd September, 1st October, 1st November, 5th November, 11th November, and 3rd December.
Restroom facilities, including those for people with disabilities, are available inside the museum.
Only visitors with disabilities and special needs are allowed to bring their service dogs with them into the museum.
The elevators at the museum include braille buttons for visitors who are blind or have impaired vision.
