The main hall of the Shurijo Castle was burnt down thrice during the Ryukyu period and once again during the Second World War. Learn how materials and ashes were carefully removed and restored with soil and covered with eaves. Since the last fire in 2019, restoration efforts have been underway, with care taken to preserve as much of the original design as possible. The Shuri Castle Ruins hold much of the country’s historical significance, evident in its harmonious blend of Chinese and Japanese building techniques.
