Getting started
Arrive at the Alte Nationalgalerie, located on Berlin’s historic Museum Island. Present your ticket at the entrance and breeze past the queues with skip-the-line access. The museum’s temple-like architecture, inspired by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV’s vision, sets the tone for what lies within—masterpieces that reflect pivotal art movements from Classicism and Romanticism to Impressionism and early Modernism.
What to expect
Wander through three thoughtfully curated floors, each unveiling a distinct chapter of art history. On the first floor, encounter the world’s largest collection of Adolph Menzel’s works, including The Iron Rolling Mill, capturing the spirit of industrial Germany, alongside paintings by Dora Hitz and Franz von Stuck that hint at the rise of Modernism. Admire striking sculptures like Schadow’s Princess Group and Rodin’s The Thinker, showcasing the artistic evolution of the era.
The second floor dazzles with Impressionist gems by Manet, Monet, Renoir, and Degas, alongside Rodin’s evocative sculptures. There’s also an extensive collection of paintings by Max Liebermann.
On the third floor, see the evolution of German Romanticism with Caspar David Friedrich’s iconic The Monk by the Sea, a haunting meditation on solitude.
