    What to expect

    Cape Bruny Lighthouse

Built in 1836, the heritage-listed Cape Bruny Lighthouse stands on the dramatic southern tip of Bruny Island and is the only lighthouse in Southern Tasmania open for guided tours. Learn about its vital role in maritime history as you explore with a knowledgeable local guide.

    Features

    • Lighthouse balcony: Climb the original wrought iron spiral staircase and step onto the balcony for sweeping views of the Southern Ocean, South East Cape, and Whale Head.

    • Prism room: Access the prism room and see the original fresnel lenses, in use for nearly 120 years, which revolutionized lighthouse technology.

    • Local storytelling: Hear firsthand accounts of shipwrecks, convict hardships, and the daily life of lighthouse keepers, all documented from original sources.

    • On-site museum: Visit the museum to view historical artefacts and deepen your understanding of Tasmania’s lighthouse heritage.
