What to expect

Berchtesgaden Salt Mine

This immersive underground experience introduces you to an active Alpine salt mine through a combination of guided exploration and multimedia installations.

Features

• Travel into the heart of the mountain on the underground mine train ride, which carries your group along the original mining tunnel system to the main visit area.

• Experience the miners slide, where you sit astride the polished wooden slide used by miners to move between levels, giving you a sense of historical working conditions.

• Visit the underground cinema located 120 meters below the surface, where a film presentation explains how salt was formed and extracted in Berchtesgaden.

• Step into the magical salt room for an audiovisual presentation that combines light, sound, and salt formations to illustrate the geology and importance of salt in the region.

• Glide across the underground Mirror Lake on a raft ride 130 meters beneath the earth, watching reflections of the rock walls and light effects on the water surface.

• Join the guided tour of Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, which connects all these elements into a single route and provides context on mining techniques and daily life underground.

• Access the virtual tour of Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, which complements your visit with additional perspectives on areas and processes you do not see in person.

• After returning to the surface, follow the outdoor salt trail around Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, where you can continue learning about salt production and its local infrastructure.

Bad Reichenhall Salt Works (as per option selected)

If you select the combo option, your ticket also includes a self-paced visit to the historic salt works in Bad Reichenhall, located about 20 kilometers from Berchtesgaden.

Features

• Use your entry to Bad Reichenhall Salt Works to explore the operational and historical facilities at your own pace, separate from the Berchtesgaden tour.

• Walk through the natural salt grotto, an interior space that showcases rock salt formations and the microclimate created by saline air.

• Observe the giant water wheels that powered parts of the salt production process, noting their size and mechanical layout within the works.

• See the Karl Theodor pump, a key component that helped move brine through the system, and learn how it integrated into the broader network.

• Visit the adjacent salt museum, where displays explain the history of salt extraction and transport connected to Bad Reichenhall Salt Works.

Wrapping up

If you choose the Guided Tour Entry + Dinner and Music option, your day concludes back at the surface with a welcome glass of sparkling wine, sandwiches, and a miners buffet accompanied by live music after the underground visit. If you select the Combo Ticket: Salt Mine & Salt Works in Bad Reichenhall, you make your own way between the two venues, using your included entry at each site within the validity conditions of your ticket.
