The exhibition explores the parallels in how both artists used painting to express emotion, bodily sensations, illness, death, nature, and other existential experiences.

Munch’s work focuses strongly on the cycle of life, death, and renewal, while Lassnig is known for her inward-looking “body awareness” paintings, which translate physical sensations and inner states into visual form.

Lassnig regarded Munch as an important artistic reference, so the exhibition places their works side by side to reveal connections in their use of colour, line, composition, and emotional expression.

MARIA LASSNIG AND EDVARD MUNCH exhibition: For the first time, around 150 works, including 78 paintings, present Maria Lassnig and Edvard Munch side by side, revealing how both artists explore bodies, emotions, illness, death, and the relationship between humans and nature. Familiar works by Munch appear in a new context alongside Lassnig’s “body awareness pictures,” highlighting connections in their use of line, color, and composition.

Access to collection and exhibition galleries: Beyond this special exhibition, you can explore Kunsthaus Zürich’s collection and exhibition galleries at your own pace, moving between sections that place the Lassnig–Munch dialogue within the museum’s broader art holdings.

Audio guides available in multiple languages: In the collection galleries, an audio guide in German, English, and French is included free with online ticket purchase, or available for CHF 4 at the ticket desk, helping you connect what you see in the Lassnig and Munch rooms with works across the permanent collection.

Food and drinks: Do not bring food or drinks into the exhibition and collection rooms, including baby food and milk bottles.

Large items: Do not take bags, rucksacks, umbrellas, or coats into the galleries; use the cloakroom lockers.

Photography gear: Do not use flash, tripods, or selfie sticks in the exhibition and collection rooms.

Additional information

Museum hours: Visit Tue–Wed and Fri–Sun from 10 am to 6 pm, Thu from 10 am to 8 pm; the museum is closed on Mondays.

Closing time: Note that exhibition and collection galleries close about 10 minutes before the museum closing time.

Public holiday hours: Expect 10 am to 6 pm on most listed holidays and 10 am to 4 pm on 24 and 31 December 2026.

Garden of art: Access the Garden of art daily from 6 am to 9.30 pm, except on 25 December 2026 and 1 January 2027.

Admission requirement: Be aware that admission is granted only with valid proof as required by the museum.

Groups and schools: Arrange group or school visits in advance via Info@kunsthaus.ch or by calling +41 44 253 84 84.

Cloakroom use: Store bags, rucksacks, umbrellas, and coats in the cloakroom lockers before entering the galleries.

Photography rules: Take photos for personal use only without flash, tripods, or selfie sticks, and follow no-photo signs where posted.

Food areas: Consume any food and drinks only in the designated café areas, not in the exhibition or collection rooms.

Reduced admission: Present valid ID on site to benefit from any reduced or free admission categories that apply to you.
