Sovereign Hill is a living museum that tells the story of Ballarat during the gold rush. Gold was discovered here in 1851, sparking the world's largest alluvial gold rush. Ballarat grew rapidly from a sleepy pastoral settlement to a fine provincial city built on the wealth derived from its gold.
Sovereign Hill's Outdoor Museum brings the gold rush to life through a living township, covering 15 hectares of a former gold mining site. With over 18 scheduled activities happening throughout the day, you can find yourself panning for real gold, witnessing musket firing, and seeing boiled lollies, wheels, and candles being made all before your eyes. The Outdoor Museum is a living museum with rare trades, working machinery, and other exhibits.
Important Information
- General Admission tickets are not valid during the annual Winter Wonderlights event.
- Please note that tickets to AURA are not included in the ticket.
- All roads and paths are gravel. There is some uneven ground.
- Main Street at Sovereign Hill is a gentle slope; however, other areas of the site are quite steep. All roads are accessible by wheelchair, but some visitors could find the gravel surfaces difficult to manage.
- Parts of Sovereign Hill have wide bluestone gutters between the timber boardwalks and gravel roads. Ramps for crossing the gutters are highlighted on the free Wheelchair & Stroller visitor map, which is available on entry.
- The wheelchair rental is free but subject to availability, stroller rental is $10.
- Due to operational requirements, restrictions on motorized and non-motorized wheelchairs apply.
- Occupants of wheelchairs must be accompanied by a capable carer or companion.
- Wheelchair and other accessibility requirements must be notified at the time of booking.
- Wheelchairs and other mobility equipment will not be operated by The Sovereign Hill Museums Association staff.

By Car Located approximately 116km west of Melbourne Tullamarine Airport, takes about 1.5 hours; approximately 116km west of Melbourne Federation Square, takes about 1.5 hours.

Sovereign Hill is a comfortable 90-minute drive from Melbourne along the Western Highway. Once in Ballarat, just follow the brown and white tourist signs to Sovereign Hill.
