The Architectural Grandeur of La Fenice
Restored in 2003 after a fire, the interiors of La Fenice imitate its 18th-century architecture, but with modern technology for excellent acoustics. Walk through the foyer into the lavishly gilded auditorium surrounded by 166 boxes. Sit on a plush red chair and marvel at the golden accents, royal chandeliers, and frescoes of angels overhead. The theater comfortably seats over 1,000 people, and can host a 98-member orchestra with a 66-person opera chorus!
A Glimpse into the Opulent Yesteryears
La Fenice was founded in the late 18th century and quickly became the top choice for the most lavish opera premiers. Famed Italian composers like Rossini, Verdi, Bellini, and Donizetti performed their operas here in the 19th century. Some of the most famous operas that graced the stage of La Fenice include Verdi's La Traviata, Rossini's Semiramide, and Bellini's The Capulets and the Montagues. Get to know how the world premieres transitioned from classical to contemporary, like Stravinski's The Rake's Progress and Britten's The Turn of the Screw.
